when HONESTY gets you in trouble! I'm a grown ass woman. I know better than to EVER discuss my WAGES with ANYONE But I had a moment of stupidity & honesty & answered a question that was presented to me & now mf's are trying to launch a mutiny up & through Okay, not a mutiny but it's officially a "rumor" that's going around. & now someone else is asking me to confirm said rumor before they renew their contract
I have no idea why I wasn't thinking on my feet. I wanna just blame my momma for raising me too honest But it ain't her fault, & it ain't mine for mf's paying me what they want to pay me... but letting it slip out IS indeed my fault. I am a serious jackass for that. I don't wanna be the catalyst for a wave of frustrated "workers", I don't want to be their bargaining tool, & I don't want to be seen as the source of a "problem" for my employers b/c they've been really cool with me. In my business there is no "fair" playing field - people pay you what you're worth to them @ the time, it's always been like that. Some of us get the door cracked open wide, others get fucking hosed. Sometimes it's about skill, sometimes it's about dedication - you just have to go for YOURS & see what happens. I just don't need the drama, I have enough trying to figure out what to eat everyday & keeping my laundry under control But I've contributed to the drama with my highly overrated honesty bullshit... Or maybe I should just claim "stupidity" on this one... FUCK, I hate this... & please don't ask me what I make 'cause I might be stupid enough to tell you . [Edited 4/30/07 3:10am]

This kinda happened to me also. It wasnt fair at all.
I was working for a company, and saw the profits grow as my designs were selling so well. I approached my boss and asked him for a raise. He offered said amount, and I was like no way, I was expecting 5 times what he offered. So he said he couldnt possibly go to that amount. I asked him to think about it over the weekend, cos I know my worth, and I wouldnt accept less. (Well yes it was an incredible amount, esp what he was used to handing out.. ) He knew he couldnt lose me so reluctantly agreed on the figure. I was so happy with myself. Anyway, it was kept secret, but obviously accounts, knew about it when they were processing my pay, and the woman who worked there kicked up a stink that I was getting paid more than her, she had worked there longer, she was twice my age etc etc I thought, well fuckkk.. you work in money, why couldnt you negotiate with the boss.. I am just a designer.. so she demanded the same amount of money as me or she would leave. She got the same amount as me,. but fuck, it was me who had to do the hard work in the first place.. I got paid what I was worth and she who worked in money all her life couldnt approach her own boss who she had known years and said look here, where is my pay rise? I will love you forever and you will never be forgotten - L.A.F.

I feel better about it now but man, I hate being involved in office drama. Or having someone scrutinize me/my work. Yes, it's all competitive but people get viscious when it comes to $ & I just don't want no paaaaarts of the drama

I know, though - this happens *EVERY* time we have a pay review in our office. We're always told not to discuss what we got but, inevitably, someone spills the beans and then all hell breaks loose. And, usually, it's the lazy 's who didn't get much that whine the most.

Yeah.. Tell people, "WTF? You think I am really on that salary? Hell no.. double that, and its closer to what I am on.. " See? I think that woman who worked in your accounts office had absolutely no right to do that. For a start, as you say, she worked in that field so you'd think she would look into it in more detail. But I think she abused her position in doing that - okay, she has to go through erveryone's wages by the sounds of it but the way she went about it... she might as well have opened up your pay slip.

I think what makes it so weird is that the person asking for confirmation of my rate is also the person who took me under their wing, trained me, gave me so much valuable info, has been so supportive & could frankly run circles around me in her sleep! So I feel shitty that they haven't recognized her monitarily in the same way they have me BUT it's really not my problem or responsibility & I don't appreciate being put in the middle of her contract negotiation

That's hard - and I can understand why that person might be upset - but they need to take the issue to your Manager, not you. There could be any number of reasons as to why you're being paid a higher wage. Try not to let it get to you, Calhoun.

Yeah I know and I was so mad, cos I worked hard for that money anway and I worked hard trying to persuade my boss to up my salary to what I believed I was worth, and she was happy on what she was getting until she saw my increase, so she threw her rattle out her pram until she got the same.. poor boss, my pay increase ended up costing him double the amount but yeah she was really unprofessional.. people always wanna know that and it's none of their business. it can be hard to lie if you don't do it very often, so i recommend a strict regimen of five lies a week. you can choose what they'll be about! it's fun.
