The fact that you had her card and thereby her identity but didn't give the money back (to the bank) immediately anyway doesn't exactly make things better.
The legal aspect: Since you've stolen her money you've already incriminated yourself, so bringing the money back won't make that undone and you might get busted when you hand it over. On the other hand, if you don't give it back then it will be even worse if they do catch you. It's your call. the corruption aspect of it: the person JD hands the money to at the counter will keep it if they can get away with it, they have mouths to feed.

And if he doesn't even try to give the money back to its rightful owner, then that wouldn't be the best moral solution, in my opinion.

You theving bastard!
IT's a tough call JD, I can see why you are now guilt riddled. It is a bit late to ask us AFTER you buy the camera though IT's done now, your lucky day, the poor ladies bad luck day. I wouldn't give a fuck about security cameras and card tracking etc, they are not gonna bother with that for such a small ammount of cash. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

This thread's great, but it needs pics, and now it can have them!
But seriously, you've got to make this right, but as others have said, you should be as clued up as possible first. It'll be alright. . [Edited 4/26/07 4:51am]

Well, its all sorted. I withdrew the full amount this morning from an ATM and went along to the bank to explain the situation. Unfortunately they said that they could not keep the money. I called the British Consulate to seek their advise and they said it was silly of her really to leave the machine without her card and that I have havent incriminated myself. They also suggested that I go to the police to make a statement which I did. I gave them the full amount and a statement and they gave me a receipt for it.

The most important phrase to know in the language of the country you are visiting: Do you speak English? (Or whatever language you speak.)
Repeat after me: Habla ingles? Keep saying it to people until someone says: Si. Then, tell them what happened. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Well the police are notoriously corrupt here so goodness knows whether they will attempt to return the money although I was assured they would. I believe Ive done everything I can now. As far as I am concerned, I feel mightily relieved. I had a terrible nights sleep last night as it weighed heavy on my mind. Im just glad I can look forward now. There's Joy In Expatriation.

Where did you go and can recommend? I had the best times and the worst times, we were there for 5 weeks in 2001. Iguazu you already saw BEST. THING. EVER. The scariest, and still most exciting time was driving from Mendoza to San Rafael, a 4 hour drive in a hire car that stuck out like dogs balls. Everyone said whatever you do, don't stop. we were sure we would be held up and robbed driving across the desert at night, with a 10 month old baby. we were there when one peso = US$1, which totally made everything twice as expensive as it was for us at home - breakfast cereal $8 WTF!!
