your earth day score

take a moment to think how you did yesterday... my own scorecard looks something like this:

thumbs up! i took my paper recycling to the collection bin
thumbs up! then i used the crate to carry home my groceries
sad but i drove to the store
sad a number of things i bought were made in china. beyond the environmental cost of transporting these items here, i think we are also exporting pollution by exporting the production of so many things we use
omfg the bag of peanuts were a product of china for heaven's sake!
sad i bought a ridiculously over packaged product... and guess what. product of china
thumbs up! it was all cardboard packaging so it's already in the recycle bin
sad i forgot to get a couple of things so made a second car trip
sad i love strawberries, but they have to come from california and are packaged in bulky plastic boxes that are not recyclable where i live
thumbs up! since there is only me, i use my toaster oven to cook instead of the full sized oven
sad i leave my computer running all day
thumbs up! i am using collected snow water for my plants and new seedlings
sad i haven't been composting
sad i absentmindedly flushed after just one pee
sad i took a long hot shower
sad there are a lot of things i could be doing differently

how did your day look?
doveShe couldn't stop crying 'cause she knew he was gone to stay dove

i grew up with water shortages so it's not out of the ordinary
if it's just me, it seems like a waste to flush from a little tinkle.
don't worry, if you come to visit the water will be pristine tease

biggrin I (always) recycle all my paper, even at work (I even pick my colleges paper out of their trash to put it in the recycling bin)
biggrin I (always) recycle all glass.
biggrin I try to recycle as much green/vegetable waste in my garden compost-bin as possible sad But sometimes are to lazy to walk outside for little bits.
biggrin I never trow out clothing that is still usable. I give them to friends or charity.
biggrin I bring everything that's still usable for others to the recycling store (did so last week, oven, bike and a few more things)
biggrin I always give small change to charity raisers that come at my door.
biggrin We don't have a car, we do all our shopping with our bicycle.
biggrin I try to by as much 'bio' food as possible at our own store.
biggrin Our house is isolated thoroughly and has double glassing.
biggrin We have a low energy heating device ( lol whatever that's called in English)
biggrin I never trow out batteries, I give them to school, they can buy stuff for the library for it.
biggrin Same with printer ink cartridges.

sad We hardly ever shop at the 'bio'shop.
sad I take a hot bath nearly everyday
sad I did bring all the stuff to the recycling store by car last week
sad I don't always recycle the plastic coffee cups at work
sad In my life I used the airplane a few times to go on holiday, same with the car.
sad We have a dishwasher.

I want to do more woot!

i am sure you would rather use your daily water ration for bathing and drinking instead of such things

thought of a couple more
thumbs up! i hate shopping bags so resolved to use a reusable tote.
sad lol guess what? it is a product of china too
sad my cat recently had to start eating canned food. the squeemish vegetarian in me can not bear to rinse out the tin cans in the sink and recycle them

i am intrigued by this one whateva! you mean regular batteries? that is excellent. even though the package says not to throw in with household garbage you can be sure 95% of people do just that. including me sad

no no no! It has all kinds of really bad chemicals inside that are bad for the environment. But on top of it all they have all kinds of reusable metals that can be recycled.

I dont know if this is good, but to clean my sufaces and glass etc. ,unless Ive been handling meat, I pour half vinigar and half water in a spray bottle.
Its cheap and cleans everything well and deoderizes.

That could easily be resolved by your government by recycling waste by slicing stuff up, getting the metal out with magnets.

I even think our government use the rest of the stuff to heat ovens at factories but I'm not sure 'cause that might give out a lot of bad smoke.

I drove out to a friend's country place (45 min) and hung out with her and her friends all day. Then I drove home (45 min). We didn't dump any toxic waste in the lake though. woot!

How about today?

nod I used fresh ingredients to make a soup
nod composted the peels
nod caught all the excess water in a bucket under the sink for the garden
nod dressed the kids in clothes I got 100% second hand
nod I turn lights off in rooms not being used
nod no TV on today
nod recycled paper, cans, bottles
nod did not use any chemicals or detergents
nod walked kids to school
nod used no sandwich wrap on school lunches

shake 2 loads of washing
shake drove to the safety shop to buy earplugs
shake used the computer
shake cooked the soup on a gas flame for hours
shake used 2 disposable nappies so far for baby Max

I don't think I was very good today sad I threw away a bottle

I did drive a Toyota, which is something confused but I drove to lunch unnecessarily sad

I recently bought a water filter to cut down on bottles smile

we recycle much more than we throw away smile

Yesterday I gave stuff to people on Craigslist.org that I could have thrown in the dumpster smile

I've decided to try to buy less from China, but that's more about sweatshops confused

We try to buy mostly local fruit smile but not all sad

We're switching to those little flourescent lights smile but they don't work in every light, like dimmers confused

Not bad, lol I realise while reading some things that others mention, that I already take loads of recycling/energy saving stuff for normal, I don't even think about it.
Like the lightbolbs, I only have one set of lights with a dimmer and in all others I use spaarlampen (I guess thats what U call flourescent lights shrug )

But I should shop more critical nod
Less plastic wrappings and stuff.
And use less water (take a shower more often instead of a bath)
