I'm pretty concerned but as I'll be really old or dead when the shit really goes down, I'm not as concerned as a little kid should be right now.

Every time. I'm telling you. lol

I can answer you.....
Global Warming is happening, but not from anything we are doing. It's called Solar Radiation!

Also, the icecaps are melting on mars...we aren't affecting that.

This Global Warming hype is nothing but a waste of money and effort that could be used to address real problems. Real problems they don't want to spend their time dealing with because they wouldn't get the same publicity, or the money it generates.

But we can address several "real" problems at once. smile Addressing global warming doesn't mean we can't address anything else.

From Wikipedia:

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes, "most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations,"[1] which leads to warming of the surface and lower atmosphere by increasing the greenhouse effect. Other phenomena such as solar variation and volcanoes have probably had a warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950, but a cooling effect since 1950.[1] These conclusions have been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is the only scientific society doubting the predominant opinion

Really? Why would the American Association of Petroleum Geologists be the only scientific society in the world to doubt that what we are doing to the evironment causes global warming? Surely it couldn't have anything to do with oil money? razz

Well, I happen to believe in global warming, so I worry about it. That doesn't mean there aren't other factors. I never said it was entirely man's fault. But that doesn't mean they aren't partially at fault.

All I was saying was if you think global warming is just a natural cycle, don't you at least believe in pollution in general?

see what global warming is doing to my posts?--edit
[Edited 4/17/07 16:49pm]

Pollution is a byproduct of human existence. It is absolutely unavoidable. The most effective way to improve the environment is to allow economies to mature to the point that they can afford to create and utilize technologies to deal with pollution. The solution is not to enact draconian regulations and taxes that drain economies of resources that might otherwise be used to come up with said technologies.

You want to talk about environmental degradation? Let's go back 150 years to when people in the United States and Europe still pooped, pissed and dumped their garbage in the streets, and raw sewage went into rivers and lakes. You know...like they still do in parts of the world.

The air and water (in the United States, anyway) are cleaner now than they were even 20 years ago -- despite our population being larger.

and here I thought draconian regulations were the answer

So aren't we saying the same thing? Pollution exists, it's gross, but there are things we can do and have done (in some places) to help clean it up?

That is not an answer to my question! My question was, with all that we are pumping into the atmosphere, how could it NOT be having an effect? The laws of physics don't stop at the internal combustion engine. . .

We are having an effect, but it is not what is causing "Global Warming."

I see. So, based on the physical properties of the carbon compounds that we are putting into the atmosphere, we would EXPECT warming much like what we are seeing.

What is it that is preventing these carbon compounds from having the expected effect?

And what effect is it that you believe they are having instead?

I'm terrified for this rock we call home...moreso since I saw 'An Inconvenient Truth'....granted what was pointed out in the movie was enough to make me wear recycled paper undies and what not, but what frightens me more is the ambivalence of government officials and how idiots like Bill O'Reilly try everything they can to discredit environmentalists...they're STILL trying to convince red-staters that the melting polar ice caps is a CYCLICAL thing....which some of them believe.... eek disbelief

Exactly. Just about every recognised scientific society recognises that our rising temporatures are due to the greenhouse effect caused by man made polution. Several of them had initial doubts but are now convinced.

We are talking about some of the smartest people on this planet here, not fucking jokers who post on the org.

Global warming is happening folks, and it's largely human's fault.
