California Apartment Blues

My first apartment in Hollywood didn't have closets. And I'm not saying that because they are so small as to be useless--there are no closets.

The one we're moving into now (next door) apparently doesn't have a refrigerator. I can't believe the shit that landlords get away with in this state. mad

I'm gonna miss you cold bottled water.

get a dorm fridge. if you have a roommate, get two dorm fridges. they're cheap, aren't they? it's so dumb that california apartments don't have fridges.

Does it have a kitchen? Is there a space for a fridge? I've never heard of that, unless you're renting a room in a big house, not an apartment. And even then, you'd usually have a shared kitchedn.

That's a good question. We were halfway through our current lease and were pretty fed up with our landlords/apt. managers. For so many reasons. So, we were just gonnna wait it out. But our current apt. blows and a much cooler place next door opened up and we were able to get slightly lower rent because they need to remodel and they need us out of our current place.

Again, I was blindsided by using logic. Why wouldn't a place have closets? Why wouldn't a place have a fridge? Why indeed. It used to--it did when I saw the place when people were living there. I have to check the lease but it wouldn't surprise me if it's not listed. And if it's not, I guess I'm SOL.

This sounds like I'm just being fussy, but I use the big bottles and those won't fit in a mini. neutral I drink ALOT of water.

My last two apartments didn't include refrigerator, washer/dryer or dishwasher and they were still hideously overpriced!

That's crazy!!
OK, I've never had a dishwasher and I've lived in buildings where I had to pay to use the washer and dryer (like a laundromat) but no fridge? Who carts refridgerators around when they're renting? It's ludicrous!

You should count yourself lucky that you're not looking for an apartment in Japan. The kitchens are always completely unequipped. No fridge, no stove, no shelves, sometimes not even a sink. And yet you have to pay 5 months rent up front, most of which you never get back (at least two, often three month's rent are "mandatory gifts" to the landlord and real estate agent, and then there's a deposit you don't get back even if you leave the place squeaky clean and in perfect condition). No wonder the Japanese don't move very often, eh?

Dishwasher, what's that? Haven't had one of those in a long time. mad

And no one uses the laundry room here, which tells you all you need to know.

Dude, that sucks ass.

My first apartment had dark wood paneling walls throughout the house except on the walls facing the outside of the building, which were painted concrete--I mean, they didn't even bother to stucco over the concrete--they just painted it like some cheapass old public school building falloff

It didn't help that my ugly ass neighbors had very loud sex to country music. confused

I once lived in a dump in West LA and one day the bathroom was very yellow looking. I looked around and saw that the light fixture was completely filled with dirty water!

It also had roaches, and I washed my dishes in the bathtub yech. Only in college!

Yeah. . . hah! dishwasher!

The laundry room in my building is pretty dead too. And ghetto (machines are broken half the time), and expensive. But I'm grateful to have a laundry room at all, so it's ok.

Point being, it's not like my standards are high, but I have NEVER heard of a rental without a refrigerator. That's really weird. whofarted
