I lived in Japan from 1978-1981 and tuned in daily to Japanese TV- didn't know what they were saying but knew I LOVED it! Socks still got butt like a leather seat...

All the toy stores in Japan still have plenty of Ultraman stuff and the original toys can be quite expensive. I never saw the show back in the seventies/eighties, but I think it still looks quite stylish, and you can see that it's had a huge impact on the Japanese action hero shows of today, which have basically cloned the concept.

I can't believe that somebody remembers Ultraman. I was talking about him the other day and nobody new what the hell i was talking about.
Does anybody remember Johnny Socko? It was the same era, Mid to late 70's.

I always wished that Godzilla would come and kick his butt, but it never happened as far as I can recall.

It's worth mentioning that the topmost photo in your post is from one of Ultraman's more recent incarnations and not from the original 1960's series.
Not to date myself, but I have some recollection of the first series when it aired on local TV in the late 60's. I couldn't have been more than about 4 years old! I viewed the DVD set too. Though crude by todays standards I found it pretty fun to watch. I used to work with a cat that was a huge Gozilla/Kaiju fan. He hooked me up with a videotape of one of the newer feature lenghth films. They are a huge improvement over the earlier series especially the SPFX. Definately worth checking out. Man I feel old...I was into Manga/Anime at least a good decade or so before it became hip. This was in the pre-internet days back when you had to trade tapes go to a comic convention to find out about the latest stuff. How come all this giants can fight in downtown Toyoko and not wind up needing to scrap some poor slob off their soles? No More Haters on the Internet.
