It's tough being straight-edged....

...especially when all your friends (and maybe some family) have some kind of vice like drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sugar, red meat, unprotected sex, etc. It's real easy for me to indulge in all that stuff, but I think I would be the person that would easily get addicted and wouldn't be able to control it.

But I know in my heart that all that stuff is bad for me, and that it'll only be detrimental to my mind, body and spirit. But when peers (and society in general) pressures you to give into these painful pleasures it can be tough trying to avoid them. You want to fit in, but you're excluded because of your choice to be straight-edge.

Why do you feel the need to *fit in* ?

If you are being pressured into doing something aginst your will, then they arent true friends.. unless you are like a sheep and gotta follow the crowd.. why not just be yourself? Its not tough to do that..

Apparently to some people it is. If you were in High School and you hadn't done it, then you just weren't in the know. Sad, but true.

Dont take this the wrong way NWF but you do seem a bit fed up at the moment. Your threads are a bit depressing to say the least. Is all fine and dandy? I ask in all sincerity.

Well I don't necessarily feel pressured to try those things to fit in because I have morals and standards and shit. But back in the school days it seemed like they knew or experienced some things that you didn't know about since you avoided them.

I graduated 7 years ago. But that's besides the point. It still goes on between me and my friends even now.

Its not besides the point.. you should have grown up by now, or at least got yourself some new and real friends..

Yeah, but they are real friends with good hearts and respectable lives. They just like to indulge in certain things that I don't.

Anx

when i was in college, some of my best friends were straightedge. i was really comfortable around them for some reason. i think because they lived wholesomely yet were still angry and edgy. it was a good balance! i was even straightedge for like two minutes. i'm still a vegetarian from that little failed experiment! lol

Okay, first of all...if you've been out of high school seven years, you need to friggin' get over it already. If anyone actually cared whether you were having sex then (and I doubt they did), they certainly don't now. Nobody remembers. Nobody cares. Letitgo.

Second, here's a late-breaking news flash for you. People.Are.Different. They have different values and different priorities. Not worse. Not better. Just different. If your friends like to eat steak or a burger or a piece of carrot cake, that is not "indulging a vice." It is making a dietary choice. If you sit there and give them the confused you deserve to eat alone for the rest of your life. It isn't your place to judge what they eat, of all things. (If you feel the need, fine. But at least have the good manners to keep it to yourself.)

It is very easy, in your 20s, to think you have all the answers. You don't. Your answers for yourself are going to change dramatically as you experience more of life, and you certainly don't have the answers for anyone else.
