Manners. Or; Sometimes People Surprise You

People my age have no manners. I can't claim to be perfect, but sometimes I'm appalled by the behaviour of teens and twenty-somethings. No one my age ever says please, or thank you, or watches their tone of voice. Society in general, really, is suffering from a complete lack of common courtesy.

And that leads me to my story.

I've been friends with this one soon-to-be-19 year old gutter punk for a few years now. He lives in the next city over, so I don't see him all that often. For the longest time he behaved like a dickhead like everyone else our age seems to. But he came down to Kelowna a few days ago, and holy crap! K. grew some manners. He was full of pleases and thank yous, held open doors for people, held out my chair when I went to sit at a table, gave up his seat to a little old lady on the bus, all that sort of thing. It was such a surprise to see. I've literally never seen anyone who wasn't much, much older than me or acting in a period piece movie behave so nicely. Maybe he just grew up, but still. shrug

Going out into town or work or at the mall and wherever else and I see all these so-called normal well-adjusted young people -you know the type; The ones that you're supposed to bring home to meet the parents -treat each other and everybody else like crap. Then to see this little punk acting like a complete gentleman was such a refreshing change.

No doubt the fact that so many of us are Kings in our own Worlds has a lot to do with the lack of consideration for others. Why be kind to someone else when you're the only one who matters?

That's probably the greatest fuck-up of the parents of this generation: We've been too indulged, too spoiled, too pampered and petted and coddled. I know I'm not as bad as some, but I can't honestly claim to be free of this generational narcissism either. It's something I'm trying to work on improving about myself.

I'm with the non-manners haters on this one. nod People can be so rude these days. confused

Manners maketh man, isn't that what they say? They're such a small thing, relatively, but can have a MASSIVE effect. Sad as it sounds, I almost get taken aback when someone gives me a friendly smile in public or a door is held open for me. It seems so rare these days whereas, not that long ago, people showed a lot more respect to others. I despair when I see the way some people behave - I swear I should be living in the 1950s. lol

God, I am so dense sometimes. disbelief Sorry. giggle

That's another thing I hate - talking about money. People can do what the hell they like, I guess, but I find it so vulgar. I don't care whether you have millions or nothing in the bank, it's none of my/your business.

And that's not directed at you XxAxX, obviously. lol hug

I go out of the way to be polite, but most ppl my age are have NO manners or any etiquette. my brothers have to be slapped by my mom before they even think of giving their chair to an elderly or pregnant woman. its just really appaling to me.

I started this life rule I try to follow: "do one nice thing every day." thats it and alot of ppl are surprised or think something's up when people try to help them, which just shows the curtesy level in todays world. so when I hear ppl overseas say Americans are rude- I can't necessarily blame them.

The rudeness of young people and their neverending sense of entitlement drive me to distraction.

Someone we just offered a job turned it down because she thought she should make 45-50K dollars a year -- to start! And she has no professional experience in the field! eek

I felt like smackin' her upside the head and telling her, "Do you know how many years I worked before I made that much?!" Kids today... disbelief

I consider it my sworn duty to take the piss out of 'em whenever I can. I gotta counteract more than 20 years of them being told they fart roses.
