Herd Syndrome

Why is it when I go to a movie and it's not very crowded, INVARIABLY some schmoes always have to come sit two seats away, or right behind us - even though there's a WHOLE ROOM of seats from which to choose?

Or when I'm waiting for a train and I'm the only person on the platform and then someone comes down and has to stand RIGHT NEXT TO ME, as if I had the secret for the perfect waiting spot or something. shrug

Today at lunch, I was sitting in an EMPTY CAFETERIA eating my lunch and a group of people come in and one of them says "this looks like a good table!" and they of course sit RIGHT NEXT TO ME in a big ass empty cafeteria. mad

What is this about?!? I mean, I'm not the world's most eager people-person, but come on. Isn't it courteous to give people a polite amount of space when you're SWIMMING in space to begin with? Are these people trying to be my friend? Or do they think I'm going to protect them? I don't understand the motives. It's like some form of advanced stupidity that I can't wrap my head around.

INSIGHTS PLEASE.

OMG, I know. disbelief

My FAVORITE is when I go to "kids" movies with my friend Thom (we have a thing for talking animal movies), and we go at an odd hour in a neighborhood where there aren't a lot of kids (lol), and we sit in the back and think we've got the whole theater to ourselves, and at the LAST MINUTE a woman and her three kids and their wheelbarrow full of snacks walks in, and they look around at the nearly empty theater, and plant their noisy mess RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. This has happened multiple times. I think theater seating should be chosen like airplane seats, in advance. mad

I hate ppl invading my personal space.. there have been times, like you say, and I am standing waiting for a tube, train, bus whatever and someone stands REAL close to me, so I move along abit, cos I dont want their germs jumping on me, lol, and then they move the few steps closer to me.. that really freaks me out.

I HATE people walking behind me.. hate hate hate and try to avoid it as much as possible

and why do women when they go swimming take up the whole lane cos they wanna swim real slowly and chat, but they swim next to each other, and you gotta swim twice as far to get round them and overtake them

and on the train the carriage can be close to empty but some freak comes and sists right next to me..

mad

grrr..!!!!

The walking behind thing also freaks me, it's more of a security/robbery thing...you're wondering who the hell is walking behind you and why.

Another pet peev...waiting in line at the bank mad

it bugs me when people walk right behind me, but it REALLY makes me insane when someone with really loud cloppety heels is walking right behind me. that sound goes directly to the rawest part of my nervous system and hacks at it with little dentist drills. it's bad.

the only logic i can think of for this is that some people come from such huge families that they have no concept of personal space or social boundaries, or why such things would be desirable, so when they see other people their instinct is "oh! let's go sit with them! it's other people! neat!" barf

It's obvious that you are world famous for knowing all the cool things and the right places to be and shit. So when they see you, they think where you are MUST be the place to be. I mean if I was in an empty cafeteria and I saw you, I'd naturally choose to be near where you are as something great might happen.

Just think of yourself as the Average Joe with Madonna like appeal. I mean who wouldn't sit next to Madonna?

People that want to be near people definitely confuse & bother me, too

I should add that this week I had to wait at the top of the stairs while my co-workers finished their conversation on the stairs.

Over here, I run into this while waiting in line at the dining facility....the local/third country nationals will come RIGHT UP BEHIND you.. omfg ..I mean close enough for them to check your wallet from inside YOUR pants....one got up on me so close that it felt like he was rubbing his junk on my leg.. eek ...which was just a bit too up in my space for me....the look on my face alone was enough to make him back off a full two feet away from me....mad

...but what chafes my hide even more is when someone gets all up on you and decide to try to engage you in a conversation.....when all you want is some friggin' space.....stfu

my whole thing is just, you know, GIVE OTHER PEOPLE SPACE. pretend like they do things with their lives that occasionally have nothing to do with you or your needs. that's all! get the hell out of people's way! leave strangers out of your craziness! don't assume people want to be drawn into your world! BACK OFF!

Americans seem to need more space than people in other countries. It's weird how someone can just be close but it feels like they're touching you almost.
