They also had ridges in them where you could rub your ruler up and down in between them so it get really hot. Then you put the hot ruler on your mates cheek and watch them squeel! you used to pretend you were getting a book out your desk in class, and talk to a friend with the desk lid slightly up, or eat sweets behind it or flick paper or gum at the person you hated, while the teacher couldnt see what you were doing.. My books hung out in there, since they rarely made it to class with me..... 
and I had the front cover of George Orwell's "1984", since that was my grad year....and some of my Prince buttons on a piece of my school gym shirt..... ...crazy to think that prior to Hurricane Katrina, my old high school did away with lockers because of the violence in the school.... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.
