Where Do You Get Your News From?

Just curious and frankly I'd really like to know.

I know soulpower gets his news from the NY Times and Washington Post (since his own paper is such a rag. razz -- j/k soulpower biggrin ) Actually it has been soulpower's posts these past few days that have prompted me to ask this question.

It's important, of course, to know what's going on in the world, but especially today when we are being bombarded with the opinions of large numbers of angry men and the potential actions of other even fewer but perhaps more angry men. (It seem like they are mostly men anyway.)

Recommend either a good single source, or, probably more helpful, several key sources of information on World Politics that you may read regularly, whether on line or in print.

I read The NYT, when I get a chance, which I do most days. I read the abcnews website as much as anything (especially when I can't think of a topic to post here). If you can get to those wire reports before the editors gussie them up, you can get a general sense of what is going on. I used to read The Economist, but that's a full time job even though it's a weekly. I follow news from Russia rather closely through this distribution list I'm on, a personal interest of mine. (n.b. If Russian troops attempt to take the Pankisi Gorge in the next week or so, look for the US to go into Iraq, despite any UN or Arab resistence.)

What do you read? This is not meant to be patronizing either. If you don't read a newspaper regularly, you could say that. There's nothing wrong with getting your news from television. What shows are best for you? Does the NPGMC news section float your boat? razz Maybe you are sick of the news! Too much shit!

Final note: If you want to flame the media on this thread, please feel free to do so, although that was not necessarily my intent here. I think if we recognize that the media is a medium, (pace McLuhan) then there's really not a lot to get mad about, although it's sometimes hard to see that. The internet means we are free from narrow channels of network news, but what is the nature of this freedom? Conspiracy theories? Deeper, less regulated, unspoken biases? I wanna know what people are reading these days.

Fingers crossed for some interesting answers...

I damn well hope you are not waiting for any interesting answers from me. :p

I get most of my news from the org...rolleyes...j/k. wink

I read The Age newspaper in Melbourne for general news and The Sun for my daily sport fix. I dont catch much news on tv but if there's something I want to catch up on I watch BBC or CNN on cable.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

IM not fully ready to weigh in on this one... HOWEVER i wish to state that this is the most solid thread I have read on the org to date... As well my world view has changed. After speaking to Soulpower and others... I see the world different now... I hold a deep regard for America... I don't agree with many things that are done... however, I love the nation I come from... not as a blind puppet whom approves of all she does and all she stands for...
I am interested in publications other then the common ... that will show me another view...I find television to be a highly controlled medium... as well many writings are...I do not pertain to have the answers... I also believe that many who so firmly hold staunchly to a singular view, should also see the value of my position. I commit to learning as much as I can.

ok so i had more to say then i thought rolleyes

Its important to get different sources. I read about 10 papers every day (well.. mainly insight stories and editorials since most normal articles are delivered by press agencies and identical in its content). its important to get an idea of different political opinions. after a while of training you can figure a newspaper out and judge for yourself if its a credible source or not. of course you can pick a paper which only purpose is to CONFIRM what you are already believing. thats dangerous. most papers I read most of y'all dont know, cuz they are german, but as 2the9s has already pointed out correctly I consider the NY Times and the Washington Post very professional publications. I also read Newsweek and Time Magazine. Whatever you do, DONT WATCH CNN! the are pure propaganda. best insight TV news are BBC world, especially "hardtalk". in the internet I prefer www.zmag.org to get some insights what newspapers from all over the world write on issues which interest me.
whatever you do... READ! READ! READ! but use your brain as well and read between the lines. that counts especially for Nep2nes and 2the9s, the only people in the world I know who can judge a newspaper without ever reading it ;-

For local news, I read the Indianapolis Star online. For national and world news, I read USA Today online and CNN.com.

Yes, I admit that these aren't the most in-depth news sources--I've heard USA Today referred to as "McNews," and its parent company, Gannett, now owns the Indy Star, so the Star is heading in the direction of USA Today. But they keep me informed on current events.

I think I gained my appreciation of USA Today back in 1995, when I spent three weeks in France as an exchange student. The international edition of USA Today was pretty much my only source for news from home, aside from the stories that were big enough to get picked up by the French media.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

Cnn is propaganda!
from tele, i like watching news from the BBC. I find their broadcasting educational and entertaining.

News from the international perspective is also a great recommendation.

Albert, NY Times is great read but very boring. Their magazine is on the crop of Boring and Dsigsuting.

Great post, btw.

Well actually there were others who were defending your newspaper who hadn't read it either, but I guess because they were agreeing with you that's okay, right? rolleyes

There is a difference between news and polemic. You should know that, since you obviously hold yourself to the highest journalistic standards.

Also, soulpower said:

If you know it's propaganda, all the more reason to watch it. In fact it would probablt be pretty naive to not watch it. Again, if you have a brain this isn't as big a problem as you might think.

And that's the key word soulpower, "think." wink

Why do you always speculate? I only remember one person defending my newspaper on that thread... aerogram. and he wasnt truly talking about BILD specifically, he was more analyzing pretty well how the power structure at a big newspaper like ours works and what problems and conflicts a journalist might have to go through.and if somebody indeed DID defend my paper... what makes you think he/she DIDNT read it??

There is a difference between news and polemic. You should know that, since you obviously hold yourself to the highest journalistic standards.

If you like you can continue being a smartass about journalism. But I dont think you will add anything to the discussion by insulting my professional integrity.I dont care anyway (since I am getting my ass kicked every morning in the staff conference so hard that you might run out crying if you were in my position), its just a suggestion cuz you might save some energy for posting some facts and real thoughts. wink

thanks for your advice, now I have actually learned from you lol no seriously, I said that to people who might not be able to "think" in terms of truly identifying shitty journalism... they should avoid CNN until they understand whats behind it. I am sure you do.

You asked for it...

Politics + economics from an austrian-economics bent (supply side): Polyconomics, run by Jude Wanniski http://www.polyconomics.com

Technology analysis: George Gilder, the man on the margin: http://www.gilder.com

IT news: http://www.news.com

And of course CNBC, but they're really ignornant about 70% of the time.

Occasionally, http://www.mises.org has an insightful analysis into the economy.

Oh! And I can't forget Neal Boortz, the "Rush Limbaugh" of libertarianism (as opposed to conservatism) http://www.boortz.com
