My first apartment had dark wood paneling walls throughout the house except on the walls facing the outside of the building, which were painted concrete--I mean, they didn't even bother to stucco over the concrete--they just painted it like some cheapass old public school building falloff

It didn't help that my ugly ass neighbors had very loud sex to country music. confused

My first apartment in Hollywood didn't have closets. And I'm not saying that because they are so small as to be useless--there are no closets.

The one we're moving into now (next door) apparently doesn't have a refrigerator. I can't believe the shit that landlords get away with in this state. mad

None of my California apartments were fridgeless. Or closetless, for that matter (closets are a must; more important to me than a fridge lol). None of my friends have ever had to deal with that either. That sucks.

You should count yourself lucky that you're not looking for an apartment in Japan. The kitchens are always completely unequipped. No fridge, no stove, no shelves, sometimes not even a sink. And yet you have to pay 5 months rent up front, most of which you never get back (at least two, often three month's rent are "mandatory gifts" to the landlord and real estate agent, and then there's a deposit you don't get back even if you leave the place squeaky clean and in perfect condition).

Reminds me of the Boston apartment market, where renting a place often requires, in addition to an application fee, an up-front payment equal to four months' rent. That's first month's rent, last month's rent, a security deposit, and a broker's fee.

The broker's charge is especially annoying because the broker really adds nothing of value. They can get a thousand dollars or more just for showing you the apartment and handling the lease paperwork (i.e., filling out a few forms). In the other major cities where I've lived, the landlord or management does this themselves and simply treats it as part of their job. There's usually a small application fee, but it merely covers the expense of running a credit check. It almost seems as if there's some conspiracy in Boston between the landlords and the brokers to impose what would otherwise be an unnecessary and unwanted service.

I don't know if all Boston apartment brokers have this policy, but the one I worked with wouldn't accept my personal check, even though there was plenty of time for it to clear. Without a local bank account, and pressed for time, I was forced to have $3,200 in cash wired to me. I then stuffed the cash -- all in $20 bills -- into a suitcase and took it to the post office to convert it to money orders. A money order transaction of that amount requires presentation of ID and must be documented on a federal anti-money laundering form. I can't recall being asked for either, but the look on the postal clerk's face was priceless, and I'm sure she thought it was drug money or something.

Anyway, my current home of Seattle can be expensive, but it's relatively renter-friendly. When I moved into my building, I paid only a small application fee, pro-rated first month's rent, a $350 security deposit, and a $150 fee that covers a professional cleaning when we move out (money well spent IMHO). I was approved on the spot, the manager gladly accepted my personal check, and the whole process took maybe an hour, including showing me the available units.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

I live in Miracle Mile now and pay about $950/month in a 2-bedroom condo-like apartment. Living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath -- i have a roommate who pays the same.

My last place was in Burbank, $895, a one room studio that would fit in the living room of this place. The Valley ain't all it's cracked up to be. Southern California is expensive.

According to certain Hollyweirdians , you somehow have a dip in your hip quotient if you live in The Valley.

Burbank is a city unto itself that's located in the San Fernando Valley.

i totally did the same thing befor i moved to Burbank. dissarola. then i lived there. nice for the mindspace i was in at the time, but it's not a city, it's a neighborhood, one that closes at 9:00 p.m. and there is something nice about knowing Hollywood and all that happens is just minutes away, but for me, i wanna be in the middle of it all.

I'm just the opposite.
I like having access to it, but don't want to be in the middle of it.
Maybe it's because of growing up in NYC and then ramping it down in the South for a few years, the chill-out factor was important.

Does it have a kitchen? Is there a space for a fridge? I've never heard of that, unless you're renting a room in a big house, not an apartment. And even then, you'd usually have a shared kitchedn.

The no fridge thing is common in LA from what I gather, it's not like that in all of Cali though...

Miracle Mile, is that the same as Mid-Wilshire? That's a great place for apartments, near La Brea & Wilshire. You don't need to live in a dump. And it's close to everything, though not exactly in the middle of the action.

Maybe it depends on what part of LA, I'm not sure. But a friend of mine lived there for a number of years & always had to deal w/ the fridge issue. She had to sell it off when she moved back to the Bay Area b/c every place here (most of them, at least) come w/ a fridge already...
