Mach

Sima - Mead

- 5 l water
- 350 g sugar
- 350 g brown sugar
- 2 lemons
- tiny bit of yeast
Wash the lemons and peel them thinly. Remove the pith. Slice the lemons and place them with the peel and sugar in a sufficiently large vessel.

Bring half of the water to the boil and pour it over the lemons, peel and sugar. Stir and leave to stand covered for a while. Add the rest of the water cold. When the liquid is lukewarm add the yeast.

Keep the mead at room temperature until it starts to ferment, i.e. about one day. Put a couple of raisins and 1 tsp of sugar into clean bottles, and strain the mead into the bottles. Loosely cork the bottles and store them in a cool place. The mead is ready when the raisins rise to the surface.

I don't think I even know any finnish foods. lol My finnish grandparents are both gone. sad
There were a few things I remember eating at their house as a kid that were probably traditional, like a weird breakfast thing that was kind of like oatmeal but not. confused

They were a couple generations in, but grew up on the iron range in very Finnish-centric communities. My great, great grandfather settled the town of Floodwood, MN (very tiny town up there). My grandfather quit school after the 6th grade to work in logging up there, and at some point moved to Minneapolis. They both spoke Finnish and the church they attended conducted about 1/3 of the mass in Finnish.
My grandmother and I were quite close. She's been gone several years now, but I still miss her all the time. sad

hug I was very close to my paternal grandmother she was from England

When I was 13 she was on her way from Montana to pick me up for the summer and was killed when a gust on wind blew her car into a concrete divider. I miss her so much still, we used to sing and laugh and make up songs lol
