I just had to explain that Dick ws short for Richard to my co-worker (she's only been in this country for a few years). She seemed very confused and I think she's filing sexual harassment charges as I write this.

If you were named Richard would you think twice about calling yourself Dick? Was "dick" not a term for "penis" or even "jerk" a few years ago?

i've never understood why people do that.

my principals name was Richard and everyone called him Dick.
I dont know whether he liked it or not.

that always puzzled me too, where do you get "Dick" from Richard?? something like that...

My Dad is called Richard but he had an Uncle Dick. I guess it depends on whether it suits the person or not. My Dad is definetely a Richard. I will have to ask him why he prefers it that way.
