Back Down Memory Lane......

Let's share a pleasant memory of our childhood.....

I remember waking up on summer mornings and after doing my house work; we'd all meet at the playground and map out our routes in the nearby woods to go build a shack by the river. We get old doors and stack them side by side like card houses and just make a huge clubhouse out of them and get giant cable spools and ust them as tables, old carpet and voila...our clubhouse/shack was done. It was our "megastructure" of that time and we'd make a two story one after becoming masters of the craft with a little help from our older brothers and cousins, etc.

Then we would be lucky enough to find some skin mags when the older cats from the neighborhood used our shack as a nighttime hangout. Then when they had to finally go home, the neighborhood vagrant would use it to sleep in. We didn't know how many purposes it served as eight year olds, but it is amazing to know how the fabric of society is woven sometimes!!

All we were doing was being kids!

The other day I was thinking about how when I was real young my mom would make me to bed at 8:30 or whatever and I would then sneak my alarm clock radio under my pillow and listen to the Twins games on the sly. It's a very happy memory for me.

Making Xmas cookies with a close friend of the family who was like a second mother to me growing up. Actually, any kind of cooking with her. She was always baking something. And she always let me taste the dough and sample straight out of the oven and let me help in any way I wanted and was always, always patient with me.

any of our camping trips with my family before my mom and dad split up. those are the happiest memories of my childhood. i remember "hiking" up a hill and running ahead of my parents. camping on the beach and playing in the sand (driving to that particular spot my dad almost got the camper van stuck in the sand and i remember my mom quietly berating him. lol ) camping by a river and finding this HUGE boulder that was smooth on one side and had natural hand and footholds on the other side.... my sister and i would climb up one side and jump off the other. it was hours of fun with just a big boulder. roasting marshmallows over the fire. my mom's "spam"burgers. lol

one of my private safe happy mental places is thinking back to when i was a little kid and my parents would take me to visit my grandparents in kansas. they lived on a big farm out in the middle of nowhere, with a big stone house that my grandpa and a few other family/church members built themselves and a nice big porch with a swing overlooking the hills of rolling grass and the clotheslines with sheets and dresses and the mens' white shirts flapping in the wind. replaying it in my memory is like something out of the movies - it really was that beautiful.

My favorite weekends as a child were when my parents would pack us into the car, pack a picnic lunch (or pick up a bucket of chicken lol ) and just start driving. They wouldn't tell us where we were going (and I found out later that often they didn't know) and we would drive to various state parks and silly roadside tourist attractions. We'd bring soft balls and our gloves and frisbees and the soccer ball and usually hike around trails and play catch and play hide and seek in the woods and such wherever we ended up.

I should do that more often now, now that I think about it. smile

One of my favorite memories is when my Mom would send me to the local creamery, and I would buy 10 fresh cooked hamburgers for $1.00.

They were the best. He cooked them right as I was watching. It was a great soda fountain place.

Going to the beach on summer night with all my family, before my parents divorced. We'd take hot dogs, sandwhiches, chips, drinks and build a bon fire and just enjoy the nice ocean breeze, happiest time with my family because we were all together. To this day the beach is my favorite place I love just going there and vegging out for a few hours biggrin

When I was around 7 years old I used to love when my Dad and I used to go pick my mom up from the cannery where she worked. It was almost like a ritual. We would line up the car on the street with the rest of the people waiting for the workers to get out. When my mom was done with her 12 hour 7 days a week shift i would run up to greet her. As tired as she was, she was always happy to see me. My mom worked at a tomato canning company. To this day, everytime I smell steamed tomatoes it really takes me back.

When I was very small my favorite uncle used to take us kids, my mom and grandmother on car trips through the mountains in Pennsylvania whenever he wanted to get out of Philly for awhile. We'd always stop along the road for a picnic lunch or to buy food from the Amish people. I tell ya, Amish food is great and the mountains in Pennsylvania are beautiful.

I love family trips. biggrin

I remember when I was about 9 and I was watchin saturday mornin cartoons. My brother came in the living room and snatched the remote out my hand and turned the channel. I snuck up on him and grabbed it and then hit him in the nose with it. I looked and there was blood on the remote so I threw it out the window to get rid of evidence.

*** Mattress surfing down Sandy Kent's house. ***

She owned a 3 story house and connecting the second story to the third was a large staircase that went straight up and down rather than the typical stairway v-shape most of the houses in the neighborhood had.

This was important because we could put their mattresses at the top of the stairs and basically ski or "surf" down the stairs on the mattresses. We would all take turns doing it sometimes for almost an hour at a time.

And sometimes General--they're wimpy ass German Sheppard would join in on the fun. Let me tell you, you have NOT LIVED until you've seen a German Sheppard slidding down a staircase on a bed mattress.

Anyways, that all ended one day when Sandy's dad walked in on us doing it. Appreantly we had not heard the car pulled into the garage cause Cindy (Sandy's older sister) was playing, of all things, the Purple Rain soundtrack.

The next thing you know 3 of us were sitting on the porch while Sandy and her sisters were getting their asses beat inside. falloff

being four or so and taking naps in that triangle of my dad's legs when he was taking a nap on the chesterfield.

having dad lay in the sun on the livingroom floor while i shaved his face with the electric razor.

not being able to sleep so coming downstairs during the evening news and curling up in my mothers lap in the old rocking chair.

when mom was baking her being patient enough to let me piddle with my miniature baking stuff. tiny rolling pins and miniature cookie cutters... little ez bake cake pans and making a teeny pie out of a tart foil.
