LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry says in a magazine interview that she was so depressed after her 1997 breakup with ex-husband and baseball star David Justice that she tried to take her own life.

In this coming Sunday's issue of Parade magazine, Berry says that since then and after a second divorce, she has learned to take control of her own life and now, at age 40, is considering motherhood.

"I was sitting in my car, and I knew the gas was coming when I had an image of my mother finding me," Berry says of the suicide attempt. "She sacrificed so much for her children, and to end my life would be an incredibly selfish thing to do.

"My sense of worth was so low. I had to reprogram myself to see the good in me. Because someone didn't love me didn't mean I was unlovable. I promised myself I would never be a coward again," Berry tells Parade.

Her roles have ranged from the beautiful secret agent Jinx in the James Bond movie "Die Another Day" to the down-on-her-luck waitress in 2001's "Monster's Ball," which won her the best actress Oscar. (InStyle.com: All about Halle Berry)

She was married to Justice for nearly five years in the early 1990s before her star began to rise after she portrayed singer/actress Dorothy Dandridge in the 1999 television movie "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge."

Berry's second marriage to singer Eric Benet lasted four years until 2005, when they divorced in a highly publicized breakup.

"We were in sex rehab after one year. I wish I had left then, but I was putting everyone's needs before mine," she tells Parade. "If I hadn't gone through the first breakup and made that promise to myself, this would have leveled me. I would have walked into moving traffic."

Berry credits therapy and counseling for helping her take control of her life. Now she is dating male model Gabriel Aubry, who is 10 years her junior.

"My sights are set on a different chapter in my life, which is motherhood. That's the goal I clearly have set for myself."

I don't believe for one second that Eric Benet is a sex addict. He's just a player who wasn't ready to give up the single life. Women like guys like that. Halle thought she could get him to change his ways. She should never have married him. I think that putting him in sex rehab was a way for her to hide from the truth(That he was just plain no good). But it looks like she's come to her senses and is moving on with her life. You live and learn.

Sure, I feel bad for anyone that is ready to give up on life and end their own. It's a very sad thing to see someone so down on themselves, but why would she admit to this now? What's the point? Does she have a new movie coming out or something?

She's not admitting this now. She's actually already talked about this like 7 or 8 years ago. It's not like she did this to let the world know this big thing about her. The interviewer probably asked a question about the changes she's gone through in her life and what she learned from her mistakes and this is one of the things she talked about. The only thing that makes this a big deal, is that the person who wrote this article took that part of the interview and blew it up even tho technically it's old news.

Plus it might be helpful to some to know that you can go through something like that and come out of it, even if you're a rich celebrity.

They may not have financial worries, but one of the great myths of life is that fame and/or fortune will guarantee you happiness.

I think it's a good thing that she's discussing it. If only one person who's contemplating doing something foolish (e.g. killing themselves over a breakup) gains some perspective from this, it's a worthwhile admission.

Of course, the point is money and fame WON'T make you happy unless you're a whole person to begin with, content in your own skin without the need for money and fame.

Time and again people confuse money with love, love with sex and so on..endlessly attempting to fill a hole that can never be until they trace the real root of what ills them.

So they accumulate material things to distract their minds from the truth, if for one moment they stopped and look around what would they see?
