I think it means that any serious subject that you can't also make fun of is perhaps not all that serious or worthy of its seriousness and a joke that does not also have a serious side is jut stupid and not exactly witty or rooted in any true humor.

Yeah, I'd say so. And the lack of confidence in this department is probably something that's been instilled in you since a young age. Girls are often told - directly or indirectly - that complicated texts, maths, logic problems etc are not for them. Boys on the other hand are often encouraged to show who's fastest and best at cracking them. This leaves many girls unaware of their own brilliance even at an adult age. It's really unfortunate.
