Image Comics' Godland is good stuff.
Nothin' really stands out from Marvel or DC...they've both gone WAY downhill lately. So bad, that I've started finding comics from the Silver Age and reading those...remembering how good comics used to be.
I've started getting IDW's Transformers...just something I've never let go from my childhood lol.

i think i'm in the same boat as you. i'm just reading trade paperback anthologies of things i can find that look to have really good writing. i have a lot of indie comics to catch up on, and marvel/dc right now are more interested in movie merchandising/tie-ins than making good original work, so i'm a little divorced from the men in tights scene of late.

Is Marvel better now than they were in the 90s? The 90s to me were the lost years--for many companies. All those special covers disbelief

i think marvel is better now in terms of art, but in terms of writing, i think they're as bad if not worse than the '90s. i mean, damn - how many teams can wolverine be in? how many 'adventures' can he have EVERY WEEK? there are only so many damn hours in a day! lol

the spiderman books still have some slight level of quality - they're back to dealing with his family life and the whole 'soap opera'/'woe is me' style of the comic, which i think is important...but it's limited by their need to tie everything in with the movie coming up this summer. black suit, sandman, venom, blah blah. and i think x-men has done lost the plot, literally and figuratively. characterization has just been completely thrown off a cliff, and that's what i loved about that comic back in its glory days. and lord only knows what they're doing with the avengers now. shrug

yeah, i'm just gonna go back to reading my transmetropolitans and watchmen and maybe check out an indie comic now and then. less of a waste of money and brain cells.

I dunno, in the 90s you had the Spidey clone saga, the fall of the Avengers where Tony Stark became a teenage boy and the Wasp was remade into an insect-looking character, and the X-men had members like Marrow and Maggot on the team. Those were not good times story-wise.

I might be tempted by this one. I know what it's about but could you tell me why you liked it so much? Thank you wink

I'm reading the 1st digest TPB right now & after being disappointed by the 3-issues original limited series, i'm now perfectly hooked by Katchoo's mafia storyline! I'm definitly gonna buy the next volume!!!

i've been reading the collected anthologies of "ex machina" recently - the one about the superhero who becomes president? it's got some really good writing. it's more of a pop culture story than superhero beat-em-up stuff. it's kind of like a less-cynical "transmetropolitan" (my favorite comic ever).

I definitly wanna give a try 2 both of 'em, particularly Ex Machina, thanx!!!

altho i am a DC fan, Identity Crisis was dreadful and convoluted.

Civil War was much better. the story was simple, the art was good and it didnt draaaaag on like 52 has.

i stopped getting 52 around issue 17.

but the first 4 or 5 issues of the new Aquaman were pretty cool.
[Edited 3/30/07 17:47pm]

I'm gonna read Civil War as soon as the TPB's get released cuz it looks GREAT!!!

I've had the opportunity 2 read a dozen issues of 52 & loooooved it, i can't wait 4 the TPB's either. I guess i like complex storylines!!!

I think the quality improved in general. I haven't read everything but as i said before, Bendis did an extraordinary work on Daredevil & i liked stuff such as "The Ultimates", "Supreme Power", "Marvel Knights Spîder-Man", "Hulk: Grey", "Avengers: Earth's Greatest Heroes", "Alias", the She-Hulk series from 2004 years ago...

Now, except for Daredevil & one Bruce Jones Hulk storyline i didn't like, i haven't been reading the main series 4 years (not that i don't want 2, i just cannot afford it, lol.)

I've been reading more DC than Marvel these last years, but i miss my old pals so i think i wanna read more Marvel now (& more indies too.)

I don't want to give anything away because you haven't read it yet. I just loved the way it was written and how Green Scar(Hulk) goes from slave to ruler.

There's going to be some serious a$$-kicking when he gets back to Earth.

Everything Peter David did is just sooooo good!!!

His 80 issues run on "Supergirl" (sadly only 2 TPB's ever came out of it) was amazing from beginning 2 the end.

I have Peter's entire Supergirl run. nod

His Captain Marvel series earlier this decade was great too. It's a shame it never found an audience and was eventually canceled.

I have the entire run, too & wow! Every single issue is so so wonderful!
I haven't read Captain Marvel. Was it humorous as well?

It was extremely humorous! Rick Jones was bonded to Mar-vell via the nega bands and exchanged places with him in the negative zone (or was it the microverse?). Moondragon came out as a lesbian in the series and had the hots for Rick's wife Marlo.

I have most of Peter's Hulk run also. That was probably the best thing Marvel published in the sorry 1990s.

I don't know, from that web site, it seems that it has just been in US cinemas, but there's a 2DVD in stores here in Germany already.
