one cola i will NEVER understand is PEPSI. barf

i'm sure it's great for people who like it, but i think some people have a certain set of taste buds from birth and mine do NOT think pepsi is at all tasty. it tastes like cough syrup or chemicals or something. yuck. if anyone leaves a bottle of that stuff in my fridge, it goes right down the sink when they leave. lol

Hey Matt, while you´re at it , please answer this question for me , since you are the Coca Cola guru...do you actually remember the original taste of original Coca Cola ( Classic ) before the whole 1985 New Coke fiasco, and does the "new" Classic Coke really taste like the "oldschool" classic Coke from the 80´s and 70´s ? Or are my tastebuds just playing tricks on me ?

Unfortunately, I was only 7 years old when New Coke came out, so I don't actually remember the taste of pre-1985 Coke. But as for your second question... it depends. Perhaps a timeline is the best way of explaining things:

  • Pre-1980: Coke is sweetened with 100% cane sugar
  • 1980: Coke switches to a mix of 50% cane sugar and 50% corn syrup
  • 1981-1984: Coke switches again to 100% corn syrup. It's not clear exactly when this happened, and different bottlers may have made the change at different times, but my understanding is that the process was complete by the end of 1984.
  • April 1985: New Coke, sweetened with 100% corn syrup, is introduced
  • July 1985: The most recent version of the "old" formula is brought back as "Coke Classic," sweetened with 100% corn syrup

(The above applies only to Coke sold in the U.S. The sweetener situation in other countries is different, and New Coke was never released outside of the U.S., Canada, and what is now the Federated States of Micronesia.)

Put another way, the "old Coke" that people remember was (at least) three different formulas, and today's Coke Classic is the final version of "old Coke," which was sold for only a few years at most.

Incidentally, a Coca-Cola executive recently stated that because the price of corn has skyrocketed, they may consider another sweetener switch. (That's ironic -- the change to corn syrup was a cost-cutting measure.) There's speculation that Coke could switch to Splenda ( mad ) or go back to cane sugar ( thumbs up! ).

You forgot about the very original Coca-Cola from the late 19th-early 20th century.....with cocaine!

Remember reading about that? THAT how Coke received its namesake in the first place.

Thanks for answering. Maybe the whole New Coke experiment was just an effort to cover up the switch to corn syrup. And you´re right , New Coke was never on sale outside the USA, Canada and Micronesia BUT you could buy it from the Americans over here ( only in certain cities with US- military bases when they had their fairs etc. ) but some enthusiasts think that the taste of German Coke also changed after 1985 but I don´t know about that.
Thanks, interesting info.

That's a common rumor, but I seriously doubt that was the case. Snopes.com has a page that does a pretty good job of debunking it. Perhaps the biggest problem with the alleged "cover up" is that Coke started using a 50% corn syrup sweetener five years before New Coke was introduced and had gone to 100% corn syrup at least a few months before "old Coke" was (temporarily) discontinued.

In any event, I think it's time for me to open a nice bottle of cane sugar Mexican Coke. My old source here in Seattle went out of business, but I found a new one. nutty They have much more in stock than my former supplier ever had, and they sell 500 ml (16.9 oz) bottles instead of the 355 ml (12 oz) bottles I used to get before.

I never saw the point of all the diet colas... really, if you want be healthy, drink water or something. If you want something sweet and fizzy, just drink the real sugary unhealthy stuff and enjoy getting fat!

Coke is fine, Cherry Coke is acceptable, but all other variations including the various diet types are all awful. Really, don't put yourself through it. Pepsi has always been awful, but it seemed to get noticeably more awful when they changed the colour of the can. I can't explain it! And Pepsi Max cannot reasonably be described as fit for human consumption.

Anyway I prefer Dr Pepper myself smile

Two awesome soda-related things to happen to me recently:

- Ordered an Indian takeaway meal to be delivered, and it came with two cans of proper old-school Coke, only with writing in Arabic. It even had the old-style ring-pull, the pull that comes off! It tasted AMAZING.
- Noticed that vending machines in Tokyo do super-cans, the over-sized cans that disappeared from our shores here in Europe many years ago. As you can all no doubt appreciate, super-cans being taller are therefore far better for squashing and bending once emptied of their contents than their shorter cousins. Bring back super-cans!

I hardly ever drink sodas nowadays, but I've always hated diet drinks. I really hate those Dr. Pepper commercials pretending like it taste just as good as the regular ones. They make it seem like its a treat, like a dessert or something.
