Why does this bother people so much?

This and the carmine. That really cracks me up. I mean, I don't even eat meat but it doesn't really bother me much. People that eat PIGS are all up in arms that they might have ingested some bug juice.

I was merely contributing trivia to the subject at hand. The idea of insect parts and wasps carcasses being in my food doesn't much bug me. wink Admittedly, consuming an insect whole doesn't whet my appetite but knowing I likely ingest one (or pieces of one) here and there doesn't keep me up nights.

It's estimated the average person ingests a total of 6 or 8 spiders a year from various sources. E. coli is found on many foods no matter how carefully washed or prepared. The air if filled with microscopic mites which are inhaled every day. The world isn't a sanitary, pure place, and it's not possible to live a completely contaminant-free existence.

Anyway I find rather a perverse enjoyment in hearing of the myriad revolting substances found in foods. It's like peeking at full-color pictures of rashes and growths in medical books. biggrin

we grew wheat on our farm. as it is harvested it was common to get bits of bug parts harvested along with the grain. when grain is "cleaned" it is put through a giant sieve but you can imagine if the bug bit is as small as a grain of wheat it will fall through as well.

this happens whether the grain is grown organically or not smile

Organic food probably has more bugs, what with the no-chemical-pesticides part.

biggrin

I don't think scavengers are dirtier, but it grosses some people out that they live in shit & bacteria. The fish/crab is meant to scavenge, and it's body must have filtering systems.

Some fish are "dirtier" in that they have higher levels of mercury, like swordfish, and pregnant women should avoid them. I think probably wild Alaskan Salmon is pretty clean, but any fish has certain toxin levels; the ocean is the worlds biggest toilet, after all.

Salmon is wonderful but the preparation is key for me. Lots of times in restaurants it's really oily, so oily it makes me feel sick. But it's great when prepared in a "dryer" way imo...

I love halibut & orange roughy. Sole is good but so damn thin... Mahi Mahi is good w/ enough stuff on it...

I'm really having a mental thing about how dirty shrimp & crab are. I eat shrimp all the time, I'm really grossed out confused

halibut is a bottom-dwelling fish, too

That's so fucked up... what about organic chocolate? Is it prepared in some way that doesn't allow that stuff to happen? Or are all factory made things just filled w/ critters? sad

probably even MORE insect legs and poo, since no insecticides involved biggrin
