psychodelicide said: Funny story about shrimp: my one aunt REFUSES to eat them because, according to her, they eat junk off the ocean floor. In fact, she calls them "bottom feeders". I guess a young girl or whoever that my aunt knows heard my aunt talking this way about shrimp, and now the girl also refuses to eat them.

Oh yeah, I knew about that. It didn't bother me in high school when my art teacher told me about the whole lobster/ cockroach connection either. Weird how I despise roaches. I was grossed out for a while, but then I went right back to occasionally eating lobster. I can live without it though. Shrimp.....on the other hand. I don't know. I love shrimp. I had scampi the other night. I guess I block all of that out when I think about how good scampi is.

It's like when a meat eater goes to a slaughter house & can't eat meat again after they see the process... or something I'd rather eat a fish that had that in its system than canned and processed food which has bugs and by-products in it. They say that in almost every canned food or pre-packaged food, you're eating cockroach bits anyway. They get into everything at the factory and they can't really do anything about it. I never eat anything out of a can, except maybe tuna once every month or so. Yeah, my aunt used to tell me about how rats would fall over into grinders and machines. My uncle once had to tour the Old Home factory in MN (a company that makes mostly dairy products like yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc.) for his job and he said you wouldn't even want to know what was in those huge vats of plain yogurt. I still eat it though. It's my favorite brand of plain, unsweetened yogurt. Maybe that's why. Not to say one shouldn't be circumspect about the quality of one's food and its origins, but no food is pristine, or devoid of some sort of toxin or pollutant or another. Too much knowledge can be a nauseating thing.
Recently I'd read that the occasional crunchiness one might enounter while eating a Fig Newton is actually pieces of wasps which are necessary for fig pollination and can't be completely removed during processing. I won't even go into the possible extra ingredients that might be found in a bar of chocolate...

For the most part I've given up eating shrimp and clams and other bottom feeders. I just can't stand looking at them live one minute and then seeing 'em dead on my plate....
Has anyone eaten catfish? I see them all the time at the local grocery but can't bring myself to buy one, cook it and eat the damn thing. [Edited 3/27/07 7:04am] "I ordered no broth! Away with ye lest my cane find your backside!!"- Ralph Wiggum, Actor.

[Edited 3/27/07 7:04am] Even before the whole bottom feeder thing I started avoiding catfish years ago b/c of that gelatinous layer of fat or whatever it is between their outer skin & their flesh. That shit gave me the willies! I would always scrape it off & then I thought, "wtf IS that anyway? why am I eating this shit?" So...

I can't/won't cook lobsters, because they have to be alive before going into the pot. My daughter went to visit family in Trinidad, beautiful, and for a week they played with a chicken. Cute! The chicken went missing, and then there was chicken for dinner! She refused to eat. (She dropped about 10 pounds in two weeks.) Eat pets? How do people do that!?! When I picked her up at the airport she had bought a box of McDonald's chicken nuggets and was feeding her leftover chicken to the birds outside the terminal. OMG, STOP! I had a fit! One time, on my aunt's farm, I mooed at a cow and the thing came at me every time it saw me! But, I was scared of/mad at it... If I can play with it or feed it, I can't eat it! Sorry. Has anyone eaten catfish? I see them all the time at the local grocery but can't bring myself to buy one, cook it and eat the damn thing.

Fried catfish filets are the bomb...you just have to be sure to clean it thoroughly....fry it in light batter with canola or peanut oil and it is great....
....and I have to agree that eating pets is just wrong....that is some cruel shit to do to a kid..... ..still....I will say that if it came down to me or Fluffy....BON APETIT!!! He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

I guess it is kind of a dumb question, huh? I don't think scavengers are dirtier, but it grosses some people out that they live in shit & bacteria. The fish/crab is meant to scavenge, and it's body must have filtering systems. Some fish are "dirtier" in that they have higher levels of mercury, like swordfish, and pregnant women should avoid them. I think probably wild Alaskan Salmon is pretty clean, but any fish has certain toxin levels; the ocean is the worlds biggest toilet, after all. My Legacy

Lots of times in restaurants it's really oily, so oily it makes me feel sick. But it's great when prepared in a "dryer" way imo... I love halibut & orange roughy. Sole is good but so damn thin... Mahi Mahi is good w/ enough stuff on it... I'm really having a mental thing about how dirty shrimp & crab are. I eat shrimp all the time, I'm really grossed out

It's not just factories with possible rodents that are the issue in regards to what extras could be found in chocolate. The cacao beans used in organic chocolate undergo the same fermentation processes as non-organic and that fermentation process is the point whereat insects and such could be introduced.
