In Korea the tradition is, when you are engaged, both the woman and man wear a matching gold band (like our wedding bands) and when they are married the man puts a diamond ring onto his wifes finger..
I think that makes more sense.. 
(But I wouldnt consider it as a bribe.. hell thats real shallow.. I wouldnt want to get married just for a ring.. hell I will buy myself a big rock if I wanted one ) if sexy was a colour it would be red  | |

I didn't need an expensive diamond, but one better than the previous wife would've been nice, since he was only married to her for a year.

I probably have bought into the marketing of it all, and I hope to one day be in the position to put a rock on a woman's finger, but this is how I see it:
There is something intrinsically life-changing in that act of giving her a ring. It says to other would-be suitors, "See that? She said yes. We're working on a date and other stuff. You're too late... Step off..." It says to her: "I'm willing to sacrifice to show you that this thing I feel for you is real. Make no mistake: When I said I loved you, all those times, I meant it.
