Why can't both parties get a present for getting married? Maybe a set of engagement rings....
Why does it even need to be a ring? Why not a pair of matching puppies? Matching contributions to a favourite charity? A trip around the world for two? Equal contributions to a new house? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I would have done it without a diamond, agreed, I mean. I like mine. Luckily my fiance got a sensible woman and he felt more inclined to give me one than I would have ever felt to demand or request I had one. All three rings has cost us just at $1k, and his ring is to be more envied than mine. He is positively itching to wear it, and I'm thinking about letting him even though we're not married yet.
Ah well. I don't know why women feel they need one first. There are much more important things to consider than a rock. I saw a barbie doll in the toy aisle a couple of days ago at K Mart, it was some wedding Barbie. Anyway, the wedding barby had a big sparkly dress with pink trim (naturally) and a humungous pink ring on her left hand. Took up most of her doll hand,in fact, and the box was labelled, "What every girl dreams of." Good to know we're bred from a young age to expect a giganormous rock on our fingers. This one's for you.

I think matching wedding bands, say platinum and white gold, is nice. Screw the big engagement ring. Mon knows she'd never get a ring with a big stone stuck in it as she'd bash that sucker on something and it'd fall out.

it would be very symbolic for me. if i don't wear her diamond i still would like to wear one. because to me it represents the strength of a bond between two people. it's not about the size or how fuckin flawless (or not) it is. it is alllll about the symbolism. if i'm a greedy bitch for that then so be it . i don't either. i find this custom to be strange and unsettling. it's like the opposite of a dowry, a hold over from the bride-price days.

Honestly she hasn't even begun to tell everything she's been through.Everyone thinks she's lucky because she "hooked" Pat. Well, let me tell ya, she was looking for anybody but a musician, wanted the simple things in life. He's the lucky one to find her and had to work hard to get her to take anything, she loves him for himself not his fame or money.. Her "real" engagement ring is an almost 4 carat pink flawless heart shaped diamond. Pat keeps it in his vault because Meggy's afraid to wear it, mostly afraid she's gonna lose it but it's not safe to have something like that in our neighborhood. Her everyday ring has three princess cut diamonds in a simple setting. It's gorgeous too and he was over the moon because she wears it. He was afraid it would still be too much. She would have been happy with anything at all from him. Didn't have to be diamonds at all. She's the best and that's all there is to that.
