I dont think you need a reason. I agree that happiness is not a constant, in fact I think its fleeting (not to sound morbid) I think we need those moments to help us deal with despair, to draw them out of our memories and sedate us when we need it lol. I think one of the rarest states is a feeling of complete inner peace, that feeling when your mind is empty except for this tranquility, like all your emotions have converged into one and life is perfect.

Yes, absolutely happiness is fleeting, and I truly think those who expect happiness to be a constant state are only going to make it difficult for themselves to even achieve that neutral, even level (call it peace, or call it contentment). I think the search or expectation for happiness will most likely lead to discontent and sadness.

I can agree with that but also say that the inner world is inherently blissful...the more inner you go, the more bliss and peace you experience. It's the outer world (pleasures and pains and distractions) that bring on the grief. I think that's what you're both getting at, but I would say a feeling of complete inner peace does not have to be a rare state of being but can become a regular state of being.

inner peace, yes, but a state of 'happiness'?
you would really have to work at removing outside influences and distractions.

if I have a to do list, I immediately lose my inner peace

OK, so seriously, I was driving along today in my car, listening to a song I like, and my heart was swelling with joy, for no particular reason other than I was driving along listening to a song I like, and I can't share that with anyone, I couldn't even begin to tell someone how happy I was. My inner world, sometimes a bit of a rollercoaster, but also filled with these moments.

Charlotte, you know I think the world of you. This thread... mushy worship hug

I could've co-signed a lot of things already posted but this was the one that stood out for me.

Apologies if this is a bit vague but a few months' back, I had a very similar experience. nod After what had been a very tough year and a half/two years - perhaps the toughest I had known for a long time, or certainly in the way it had affected me - I had an absolute crystal clear, epiphanical moment. I was standing at my kitchen sink, washing dishes of all things, the housemates and other assorted friends were in the other room, the sun was shining in on me, and - all of a sudden - what had been troubling me (and how it had unwittingly been affecting me) suddenly made perfect sense. I was so happy, I almost burst into tears. I felt transcendental, almost. I just stood there, enjoyed the moment, and knew I'd look a right idiot if anyone came into the kitchen at that moment. lol As it was, I kept that feeling all to myself - purposely - and it's something I refer back to quite regularly.

I did try explaining it to a good friend of mine a few weeks ago and, unfortunately, it made little sense. confused Either that, or she wasn't interested. rolleyes It de-valued it, almost. But I know *exactly* where you are coming from. nod

hug

Like some bad made-for-TV movie where the main character is is sliding down a slippery slope to rock bottom combined with Valley of the Dolls. No one would want to be in my inner world. Believe me. I don't even want to. lol

Things are looking up this week though.
