How Many of You Have Moved Out of Town for a New Job Opportunity?

Was it difficult to be away from parents, and old friends? Did you have a hard time adjusting? What advice would you give to someone who is considering doing this, but is unsure and is weighing all of their options? I want to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I did this and it really was a very difficult, individual and personal decision when it came to weighing up all the pros and cons. Obivously a lot depnds on your own circumstances but take time to literally write down all the points for and against, considering every co-factor you can think of. Get it all down on paper.

Best of luck to ya thumbs up!

Thanks for your input. I definitely will write down the pros and cons and see if it is what I need to do right now.

I once moved out of town to get away from a job. lol
I didn't work the entire summer I lived away. I eventually just came back home. But I'm happy to have had the experience.

What made you decide to come back home, if you don't mind me asking?

I missed my friends, I missed Minneapolis. I made new friends in the short time where I was, but it wasn't the same. That and I hadn't found a job I wanted. There was much more pulling me home than keeping me there.

I believe it. That is why I'm hesitating about moving away too, the fear that I'll miss my parents, my friends, and my hometown (as much as I complain about it. lol I've lived here my whole life and it feels weird to think about living somewhere else).

Yes, on numerous occasions.

It's not so bad, if you're nomadic by nature.

Otherwise, it can take some adjustments.

It definitely takes some adjustments and getting used to a new place. I think some people have an easy time of it, and other people have a harder time.

I moved far away from home directly after college. I was really ambitious at the time, so I did it for my career. It does really change your relationships with family. You can't just drop in. It becomes expensive and time consuming to fly across the country to see them. But it enabled me to find a different family.

But when I moved, I also had a plan to stay there for a while because I wanted to develop long-term friendships and community. So now it's been 15 years in California. I'd lose so much by uprooting again, but if I had a great job to go to, I would do it. nod

Why, because it's sunny and there are lots of flowers and trees around where I live? lol

I just moved to Canada. It's thousands of miles away, and about $1000 flight.

I did this because I felt it's best for me. there was nothing where I was living, and if I want to be able to live my life with the ability to pay for things, it's the only way.

When it comes to my parents, I miss them, yes, but they also knew it was best for me to move. The decision was heartbreaking but was very clear. It had to be done.

Phone calls are not that expensive. and even if they do look that way, you could always sign up to jajah and talk for free on the phone for about an hour a day. smile

I'm glad I made that move. Best decision in my life.

From one of your threads a while back, it sounded like you have a lot of love, peace and friendship in your life. nod Trees and flowers sound nice too. But of course, it's your call whether you're happy or not.

All or near most have had me relocating.. to a completely different part of the country, but I adjust pretty well to new areas and new people, its been a way of my life in so long..

sometimes I think I just need to sit back and relax and stay put.. but I am a natural traveller anyway, and its just as easy to go back home to visit, so it doesnt really bother me.

I have looked at jobs overseas too, the States, Italy, Hong Kong, India, Turkey and Spain and if the package is right then I wouldnt hesitate to go live there. The world is a smaller place than it used to be and its there for us to discover and taste its finer essences

I am just SO glad I didnt take the job in Istanbul.. lol

I have had to move for a job, when I was in the military.

It certainly does have its pro's and con's.

If you are the type to see your family every day, not just speak to them on the phone, it will be a major adjustment. It's an adjustment just knowing that those you are use to being around (either family or friends) are not just an easy trip away.

If you can and haven't already, I would suggest you take a trip to where you are contemplating moving. Spend some time where you would be working and see how you feel about it.

Finally, if you can, make sure you can move if you get there and you really don't like it. I know of people that moved to Utah for a job and H-A-T-E it, but they don't have the money/resources to move back to where they came from and for me, that would be the ULTIMATE frustration.

hug You have all my good thoughts while you make the decision!! I wish nothing but the best for you.

I moved to London because of a very job. Luckily I got to stay with my Nan so at least moving wasnt so much of a problem. However, it turned out to be a bad and dissapointing experience. I didnt have much of a social life down there what with London being London and a relationship I was kind of in didnt work out as I hoped. Having said that, I would move if there was a job I really wanted.
