i like to tip well when i go out, which isn't very often.

I begin him/her at the respectable 20% and it can go up or down depending on service. But I TIP ALL THE TIME. Because I was a waiter at one time and dealing with the public on ANY level can be a trying adventure in futility and self control.

I'm embarrassed to say how much I tipped for our curries tonight. redface

I should get a blow job for the tips I shell out. For fuck's sake, I need to get counseling. It's nothing to be proud of. I need to let go of my mustard memories.

if i'm at a public establishment and i didn't cook it, serve it, clean it up, or order it by a number, i tip. how much depends on the service. i waited tables for about 10 years, off and on. i expct good service because i gave good service. i start with 15% and go up from there. if the service is bad, but i didn't have to go in the kitchen and remind my server i was there (yes, its happened), i leave 15%. i've had great servive and left 50% tips, as well. it all depends.

most of the peeps waiting tables are doing it because they need the flexile schedule and the cash...we're talking students, parents, and seniors who can't make ends meet. like anxiety said, if i can't afford a tip i should be home cooking and cleaning for myself.

I always try to tip well when I go out, like 15-17 percent minimum with more for good service. I work in a kitchen and my sister used to be a waitress, so I know how it is. For every night a server makes 100+ in tips, there are plenty when they're lucky if they make enough to pay for the gas to come to work for the week.

The only way I would not leave a tip would be if I were completely ignored and just had general lousy service. That has not happened very often tho.

Saves me writing that out. lol highfive

As someone already said: Good Service = good tip; Bad Service = bad tip. Although I'd have to be seriously pissed off by the waiter/server's attitude/service not to leave anything at all.

Which reminds me... hmmm lol

This one time, in Toronto, my mates (mostly women) and I went to this restaurant and we all went cuckoo over this guy serving us. drool boff lick God, he was divine. I can't remember what the hell his service - or the food - was like but when it came to shelling out the cash, he must've thought we were rich bitches or something. lol Either that or he knew we all fancied him cos we paid well over the odds. disbelief rolleyes lol

Then there was this restaurant in Amsterdam and it was quite honestly the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. Our food was late, it tasted horrible, the waiter was rude - no, aggressive - just a bad experience, really. We all set to leave without paying a tip but I'm sure he could see what we were planning. The cheeky censored came up to all of us individually, with a credit/debit card machine omfg, and made us each pay for the meal, factoring in the tip automatically! Um, I thought that was *my* decision??! Needless to say, I was too much of a wimp and stoned to argue about it and paid what he asked for. I was fuming. lol

I am, except when the waiter is rude then NADA.

Reason being that i've learned in marketing that whether the check includes service charge or not, each item in the menu is already priced with an addition 15% of it's value at the very least.

What about tipping OTHERS besides waiters/waitresses?

Does anyone tip the gasoline station attendants? I always use self-serve gas stations...but when I do use a full service station, I usually give the guy a $1.00

What about your barber/hairstylist? I go to Supercuts ($12.00 haircut) and leave a $3.00 tip. I hope that's sufficient.

...and what about the people who bag your groceries at the supermarket?

Some people order, eat and leave without payin'.

There are some places where I think that that's perfectly alright.

I haven't done it a few times, sometimes when I was tavelling without money or aim.
And sometimes when the food or service was very bad or highly overpriced.

If I didn't have money I'd just not go in; if the food was bad I wouldn't go again; if it was highly overpriced, again, I just wouldn't go again. The only time I'd walk out without paying would be if the service was embarassingly bad. Or I found a finger in my soup or something.

What if you were having trouble staying concious, and you knew that eating something would solve the problem?
And if also you didn't have any money or any way of getting hold of any in that moment.
Time is running, and your strength is dwindling fast, truth B told you can't afford the luxury of reasoning things out, so you sit and and order a fine meal in a composed manner. The food is served and it's mindblowingly good.

In my experience, full service gas stations are very, very rare outside of the Northeastern U.S. The one exception that comes to mind is the state of Oregon, where -- get this -- it's illegal to pump your own gas. (This is the same state where you need a prescription if you want to buy Sudafed.)

Generally yes. Many years ago, I delivered pizza, so I know what it's like to work for tips.

One interesting thing I remember about that job... the most expensive neighborhoods in our delivery area (upper middle class) were probably the worst for tips.

I used to wait tables too! For 4 years. It's very very stressful work, and you often get clients who think you're just some flunkout and they treat you badly. And then you get clients who stiff you even though your service was great.

So, I'm like you. I always tip well, and have only tipped poorly less than 5 times in my life becuase the service was so bad. I went to an Italion restaurant once with my two nephews. The waitress came to my table last (even though we were the first of 5 tables to arrive). And took forever to even get me the sodas. Normally I'd say --she was the only one working the shift--but it wasn't like she was real busy. She actually had the nerve to stand at the table next to mine and chat up a storm with the folks at the table for 5 minutes before acknowledging me.

Ugh, yeah, isn't it lovely when you feel you're paying for nothing? sigh

My waitressing "days" (more like three months, tops) were right after I graduated. I had nothing else to do until fall at my local JC, and I have a great rack, so I though waitressing would be the way to go. OH MY GOD, I couldn't believe I could be so bad at something. To be in charge of over twenty tables and answer to the alcoholic cook/owner (who threw hot oil on me once and a large tub of mustard with the lid off another time) was just too much. The patrons just felt sorry for me. lol Especially when I'd greet them looking normal and come back with their drinks a minute later covered head-to-toe in mustard.

And I'm not fucking kidding. I really wish I were. lol

In Sweden the tip is included in the bill, which sucks because I quite often feel like I don't want to leave any tip at all (service is terrible in this country). If it's been really good I might add up to 10% but that is the definite maximum.
