I always try to leave a good tip, but alot of places here make the waiters put all the tips together and then split them up at the end of the shift.
Where I work now if we are given a tip we have to accept it and then put it in the donation bin, If we keep it and get caught the owners press charges on you for stealing.
Ether way its wrong, the person doing the work for you should get the tip that is given to them for their service

Generally, I agree, but if the restaurant has busboys and expediters, in addition to waiters/waitresses, a portion of the tip should go to them. I've waited at places where I had to tip out bartenders, as well. Bartenders should tip out barbacks, also.

here 20% if you were served really well, they have a tips glass at the counter sometimes which gets split amongst all the staff confused no obligation to leave tips since they are get paid properly here.

boy things are different here to there

a restaurant here can be fantastic in food and excellent service and STILL be inexpensive.

nod

I generally tip 15-20% or even more depending on the service at restaurants.

My stylist is a long time friend and I pay him directly instead of the salon he works for, so I only tip him about every other service, and then I usually give him an extra $10-20.

$25. Me either. If I was eating alone or with a date. I think it also depends on the place, if it's neccesary to tip.

I used to wait tables too! For 4 years. It's very very stressful work, and you often get clients who think you're just some flunkout and they treat you badly. And then you get clients who stiff you even though your service was great.

So, I'm like you. I always tip well, and have only tipped poorly less than 5 times in my life becuase the service was so bad. I went to an Italion restaurant once with my two nephews. The waitress came to my table last (even though we were the first of 5 tables to arrive). And took forever to even get me the sodas. Normally I'd say --she was the only one working the shift--but it wasn't like she was real busy. She actually had the nerve to stand at the table next to mine and chat up a storm with the folks at the table for 5 minutes before acknowledging me.

Ugh, yeah, isn't it lovely when you feel you're paying for nothing? sigh

My waitressing "days" (more like three months, tops) were right after I graduated. I had nothing else to do until fall at my local JC, and I have a great rack, so I though waitressing would be the way to go. OH MY GOD, I couldn't believe I could be so bad at something. To be in charge of over twenty tables and answer to the alcoholic cook/owner (who threw hot oil on me once and a large tub of mustard with the lid off another time) was just too much. The patrons just felt sorry for me. lol Especially when I'd greet them looking normal and come back with their drinks a minute later covered head-to-toe in mustard.

And I'm not fucking kidding. I really wish I were. lol

lol

Honestly, I wish I would have learned to be a bartender.
The bars/nightclubs in Tampa that have Gay nights, are brimming with money. The bar tenders on these nights can rake in a thousand bucks a night easily.

I always double the tax. so I'm usually a 17% tipper.
But, I do reduce it for bad service, and have increased it for exceptional service.
...and when the service is HORRIBLE, I have (on 2 occassions) left NOTHING.

I've always read that if service is horrible you should leave a very small tip b/c if you don't leave anything they could conceivably think you just forgot. A small tip cannot be misinterpreted.

I'm an average tipper in restaurants--usually try to leave 17%-20%, but I think I am pretty good with cab drivers...if it's less that $.50 for the change I'll round up + $1. If it's higher than $.50 in change, I'll round up and add $2. Most have to rent their car, and then with the cost of gas, I have no idea how they make any profit. (I know some people who will only tip 30 cents on a fare that's like $6.70 or something. disbelief )

I used to work as a server and a busser so I know how hard the job is. So I tip pretty well, but if the service is completely crappy then I leave a quarter. lol

hold on, I don't want them to rattle of everything (cause that annoys me) if they take the initiative and suggest a drink or dish that's not listed. like you’ve said, something that they really liked that I might enjoy.

I hear you smile @ the place I worked @ they would try to enforce the policy that you push ALL the specials, push ALL the soups/salads/desserts - I never did that. If a mf can't figure that they WANT a salad I'm not gonna talk them into shit. But I'm glad to guide them to what I like if they're interested. Needless to say my sales were never through the roof lol But I think my customers were happy, & I never sold my soul exclaim

I like to tip big if the service is really good; but at the same time I'm not afraid to leave no tip at all if the service is poor. I've worked in the service industry - it's not difficult to be polite; and it's what they're paid for!

That's what I could never stand, don't try to sell me anything I'm already eating there, help me to enjoy the experience so I'll come back again or tell others about it. Which is something I do a lot, I’ll tell people to ask for a specific person as their server at places I’ve gone to.

But it IS your job to pay them! That's how it's set up! Unless you go to some fast food place or something, where tipping isn't allowed. I think if people are anti-tipping, they need to lobby for better pay for waitstaff so that tips are no longer necessary. Still, until that day comes, ya still have to tip or else get in the kitchen and start rattling those pots and pans!

You do know that paychecks for servers can be as low as $6 for A WEEK OF WORK, right? At least that's what my checks used to look like, it can't be much better nowadays.

Servers LIVE on their tips, they do not receive a regular wage BECAUSE OF their tips. disbelief
