I spoke to my brother today. seems like he does sometimes rent kayaks in the summer. He says that you can go with the kayak all the way to the island. Sounds like fun to me.

Perception makes great kayaks. I almost went with a perception instead of the Prowler 15. I think I chose the Prowler cuase it was almost an inch more narrow than the perception model---not becuase of quality or asthetics.

Paddles. A decent pair will cost 100-150 bucks.
A really nice pair can run as high as 500 bucks (super light weight).

And then you need to check with your coastguard (or an outdoors/surf store) for regulations in your state and country. In Florida, you have to wear a Personal Floatation vest, or have it within arms length, and you have to carry a whistle.

Every state/country will have it's own laws. None of them requrie a license or anything like that to my knowlege.

It depends on how much you're willing to pay and the weather where you are.
I live in Florida, and it gets really really hot and muggy here for a good part of the year.

Flotation vests can go for as little as 30 US dollars to as much as 150 US dollars.

Mine cost about 120 I think. It's primary floats are in the front as opposed to the back (Which would retain heat), and it allows me more manueverabilty than the normal vest (so I can take pictures).

Another thing you may want to purchse is a dry bag (you can get really nice ones for cheap). Dry bags allow you to place your belongings in them without getting wet (and trust me--no matter how careful you are, they WILL get wet).
