right...so my mac died this weekend and well yeah.. shit.

anyway, ive been bogged down and on the point of near losing it with these fucking paintings i had to do for my painting class...

three 3'x4' paintings due in what my prof claimed to be a month, which was NOT a month...ass hole.
needless to say the series isnt done...im going to go home after this class (yes in class) to finish the first out of the 3....its due tomorrow as a absolute last date...

anyway, the idea of the series was to take a picture important to me and an article of the same calibur and put them together..i recently unveiled my dread locks...and that was an important step into becoming who i thought i should be...and well, the article corresponds nicely...
each piece needed to be done in three styles: the first as a classical or realistic style..which is why it's not done because i LOATHE realism... the second as graphic art style which was sooo fun! and the third as a collage which was fun too... so here are the second and third:




for this the face is done in ripped newsprint of the article typed out over and over again in different fonts, and the hair was painted in melted wax with black acryllic overtop...

i'll have pix of the first one by weekend.

This one is a winner. Aesthetically gritty, the strands of hair slanting upwards like a set of stairs, is great. Normally paintings depicting "stair patterns" depict struggle, strife. Though I think this painting is more about finding a voice.

The use of two primary colors but omitting the third (blue) normal evokes a somber mood (sometimes spooky mood depending on the picture). Introspection.

To me, I'm not sure if it was your statement, but it seems like a rejection of media-hyped anglo-centric barbie fashion.

Great work. Don't let Murray discourage you. I'd look up art he does and see what his artistic style and talent is, just out of curiousity.
I had a graduate student as a counselor at the University. Just needed 2 more classes for a BFA. She informed me I had to take English 101 over as it had been 10 years since I took it. Wasn't a very nice person. I had even taken more advanced classes in the English dept.since then. I decided I didn't need a BFA after all. Left her office in tears.
Years later when we moved to a bigger house, our interior decorator brought in a huge painting of hers for a wall.....I took one look at the artist and told him, "Get that thing outta here!"
It was a Georgia OKeefe flower type of painting even I could've done. HA!

You know most art school teachers are BUNK. If they were actually any good, they would not be teaching. My partner spent 2 1/2 years in an art school and is now in 35K of debt (well we both are now) and has nothing to show for it. He has quit the school. I think it did more damage than good. But you would not believe some of the crack pots that worked there. One teacher was supposedly famous for puttng out a comic book called "Butt Man" or "Fart Man" and expected his students to work on similar projects as a team.

I think these schools are good for 2 things only...Teaching you a few of the skills you need to hone in on your talent AND getting you placed in a job once you finish.
