I do this because of the fact that many teams in my conference run a Option or Double Wing. A 4 - 4 is a very safe defense against run or pass cause it takes away underneath routes cause the linebackers read and react, but you need lock down corners. Every one in a while I run a 4 -2 - 5 on obvious passing downs. But I really prefer a 4 - 4 Texas. Its worked for me.

Take a team like next years Broncos (with dre bly and champ bailey) or a ravens defense ( a 4 - 4 ) would be perfect in fact the ravens run a modified 50 that is super similiar to a 4 -4 texas. The problem is lack of cover corners, therefore they keep 2 safety's. This is why cover 2 is so popular in the pro game.
