Park Puts Squirrels On Birth Control

POSTED: 8:02 am CST March 6, 2007
UPDATED: 8:22 am CST March 6, 2007

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The squirrels will be going on the pill at a Southern California park.

Actually, the birth control hormones will be given by injection to the rodents in Palisades Park in Santa Monica.

Officials said the squirrels are breeding like rabbits. Many in the community don't want the squirrel population controlled by killing the animals.

So, officials said the birth control shots shouldn't upset the animal lovers.

This summer, the shots will be given to both the male and female squirrels in the park.

If they're going to do this (and I don't think it's a terrible idea, really), why the fucking fuck don't they feed oral birth control in some damn peanut butter or something?

Squirrels are very, very difficult to handle. . . that's just crazy. Not to mention traumatizing for the squirrels.

Naw, they're tough little fuckers...especially red squirrels They'll be fine with being handled for a few minutes.

I'd be more afraid for the people giving the shots. Like you said, they are wrangy little guys and pack one hell of a bite.

this plan is not perfect but imo it's much better than simply exterminating the squirrels. too bad we can't apply a similar approach to the perceived problem of over breeding in wolves, and prairies dogs.

Some people are always going to have a problem with having to share "their space" with wildlife. Some people will never, ever change their minds no matter how hard you try to educate them. Believe me, I used to have to deal with these morons every day.

So, I see a population control strategy using birth control instead of a cull at least a step in a better direction.

At least they're not chewing through your window screens and getting trapped in your house...

i don't fear them, but a part of me is wondering inside what the heck would i do if a squirrel decided to run up my leg and perch somewhere on my body. i mean, i'd survive and all but wouldn't the encounter be something for america's funniest home videos????
eek lol lol lol
