Traffic Merging...an informal poll 
Taking your normal, everyday driving habits into account: If you are the black truck on the left, do you... 1. Cut into traffic now, and hope not to offend anyone 2. Drive as far as you can possibly drive, then merge into traffic, THE HELL WITH THE REST OF THE DRIVERS! I think I'm a 2, but I used to be a 1....with age comes wisdom my friends.

Why does number 2 have to be "to hell with the drivers" and number 1 be "not offending anyone"?
I think the most important thing is that the lanes merge at one point instead of several because otherwise if you're in the lane where everybody is going you might well end up letting in more cars than you should need to. I think everybody should agree on option 2, which would then cause the lanes to merge neatly and fairly like a zipper.  | |

they don't do the zipping here as such, but the new rule is you must give way if the car beside is further in front (even by a nose), so it works, sort of but it means some drivers speed up to get ahead and some aggro ensues. | |

I hate when people ride the merging lane out all the way to the end and then they have a hard time merging over, expecting you to let them over. There's always a sign indicating that the lane is gonna end like a mile away, but they still never bother to get over beforehand.

if the merger has been caught unaware or has attempted to merge i will let him in
if the merger has purposely sped past to budge the line i will not make room for him
in your photo example i say the onus is on the merger to slow and merge rather than speed up and merge. however if traffic was equally heavy and the car behind can see your blinker then they should by rights let you in.  She couldn't stop crying 'cause she knew he was gone to stay | |
