IrresistibleB1tch said: retina said: Why is it like that then? With that system it must be perfectly possible for a candidate to win against the opposing candidate even though in total the former got much fewer votes than the latter, right? In other words, the outcome of the election might not reflect the will of the majority of the American population. . that's what happened to Al Gore in 2000 - he won the popular vote, yet lost the election. well, and then there was that whole superior court selection thing. So how do they justify having such an undemocratic system then? Surely there must be advantages that I can't see since they've decided to keep it.

I think you're right, it may have been a protective measure so the electoral college didn't necessarily have to pick the same candidate that the voters picked, just in case the voters picked the "wrong" candidate. Well if you don't trust your population then why hold general elections at all? And I can't see how the size of the country can have anything to do with it. Can anyone else offer an explanation?

If you ask me it's because it's good for the government for people to believe that the popular vote wins, but also good for the government that they can ignore the popular vote if they think that's necessary. The Electoral College is a middleman that creates that loophole. But I'm with you, I don't think that's a very good reason, just the most likely one. My Legacy
