the editing, actually. research is fun, too, but ultimately, i love the process of tweaking the application until it is just so.

do you do that free-lance, or for a specific company? I'm writing one (or avoiding it, at least) right now!

How did you get into that?

have you ever heard of a grant application where the applicant must fill out a form like as in taxes? are there any "help" sites around for that?

i hear there is a new regulation that all meat-based foods will be confiscated at the front door and redirected to Dr. Atkins. they are trying to give him another heart attack for being obnoxious even by hell's standards. lol

sounds like a mid-term report for a multi-year grant, to be completed about the use of the previously given funds.

interesting, that's the boat I'm in. I'm planning an event, and every year I say "this is the last time" I'd like to get into writing grants freelance

My company is opening a third site. We do adult day care for people with dementia/alzheimer's. We're asking for $25,000 in startup money. They've funded us before, so if I don't fuck up to badly there's a good chance I'll get it.

What would you say your success rate is? Do the companies expect you to get a yes? Did you provide a portfolio of your work?

okay here's a question: cows have special stomachs, designed for processing large amounts of vegetation. won't the chicken-eating cow encounter some.... digestive problems eventually, if not already?

but to answer your other question - i don't know of any general advice type websites for that. sometimes the funder will have information on their website. if your friend needs some general help, have him or her get in touch with me and i'll see what i can do.

if they've given to you before and have no restrictions about new grants from existing organizations, you should do just fine, especially if you have good outcome measurements.

and i hear you about events - i couldn't bear the thought of dealing with another one. especially since i felt like i had pimped out my own principles for the last one (a tour of the home of a big game hunter - with tropies and shit disbelief )

if you're thinking about going freelance, i can recommend going through the certification with Research Associates http://www.grantexperts.com/ - that was very helpful to me.

my success rate varies from one organization to another. some programs are simply "sexier" than others. i'd say, with a good organization that has solid outcomes and a confirmed needs statement, i get about 80% of the grants we apply for.
