Excellent question. It's a stupid reason. When I was a kid I had mad messed up teeth, so I always smiled with my mouth closed. Then I had braces and I kept it closed, now I have great teeth but I do it out of habit.

Plus smiling too wide makes my face look even fatter.

I'll post a pic of me smiling when I get home.

I've noticed that whether or not not you do the toothy smile often depends on culture. In Sweden it is extremely uncommon to show our teeth when we smile and it's the same in most of Europe, Japan, and a bunch of other Asian countries. However, in the US and in many African countries it is very common. In South America it can go either way, it seems. It's quite interesting.
