I have to have my dog put down ***UPDATE! I GET TO KEEP SIMON!*** GREAT news everybody! We got a call from the bylaw officials today giving Simon a second chance! I don't have to get rid of my baby after all!
It's on strict condition, of course. We have to build a dog run in the backyard, and he's not to be allowed outside offleash at all for 3 years, and they'll be allowed to do random checks to be sure we're complying. I'm so incredibly happy though! Thanks so much you guys for all your support. I just found out that I've got to get my Jack Russell, Simon put down. He got loose from the backyard after a strong wind blew the gate open, and charged at another dog. The other dog had been out walking with it's owner, an older lady. The woman tried to seperate the fighting dogs, getting her hand bitten by one of them in the process. A crowd of people gathered quickly and a man managed to seperate them by throwing both dogs into a nearby creek. I just got Simon at the beginning of January. He came to me from a Jack Russell Rescue group. I knew that he'd had a history of aggressive behaviour toward other dogs when I first got him -behaviour that's pretty common in JRT's. He never had and still hasn't ever had problems with people. Always very friendly and happy. Even so, I took every precaution I knew was needed for a dog like this. Supervised him when he was outside in the backyard, had him wearing a muzzle when out for walks, avoided areas I knew there'd be other dogs, crossing the road or switching directions if we did come across another dog on a walk. I did everything I could. I'd had experience with JRT's before, as the pair of dogs I'd had my entire life were Jack mixes. But because this has happened before, there are no other options. I've already spoken to the rescue group I got him from and city bylaw officials. This was his last chance. I'm really upset about this. I've only had Simon for just over a month, but he was like my kid. [Edited 2/22/07 0:01am] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

awww, that's sad. poor simon. but remember, you are not to blame.
at least you tried and made an effort. someone else messed simon up as a pup or maybe he's just got some wrong connection in his brain to make him act so violently toward other dogs. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

this is a long shot but - my male cockatiel has a history of aggressive behavior and at one point the vet prescribed prozak for him. any chance simon might benefit from medication like that?

you know if he is a "red zone" dog there are ways to fix it, i dont know where you are, but there are books and videos on how to fix this behavior problem

I'm sorry Erin.
We had to put down a beautiful black and tan hound/ lab that we had a few years ago. He charged through a window and bit the paper boy and snapped at the Vet when we took him in for a check up. He was such a gorgeous dog and very sweet to people he knew. It hurts like hell when you have to do this. it's so hard to know what to do when dogs go at it.
you want to get in there and pull them apart but then you are likely to get bit in the process. poor doggie. for you that opened your heart and your life to him for another chance.

I am so sorry for you. I know my dogs are my best friends in the world. and the thought of loosing them makes my eyes water.

So sorry to hear this, how awful! Animals do become like our children, no doubt about that. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Make up some story that he got hit by a car and killed or something. Then go re-register your dog as a new dog, and tell them you adopted a new dog, a stray

So sorry to hear this. You gave him another go at life though, without you he might possibly already have been put to sleep. You really did everything you could and you did it VERY WELL, but some things not even you can fix. He will be at peace and happy in the ever green fields.

My last pair of dogs I'd had to have put down, but even though I'd had them much longer than this one it was easier to go through with because I knew it was the right thing for them, both being old and sick. Simon I didn't think really deserved to have to go. I feel so strange now, all the anxiety and upset is passed. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
