The Netherlands/Holland/Dutch?

Can't you people make up your mind?

How many of you Americans KNEW that Holland was a country, and NOT a city IN the NETHERLANDS?

that's funny.....Pennsylvania Dutch has actually nothing to do with the Netherlands.....more with the germans.....americans always confuse 'dutch' with 'deutsch'.....

no worries, you're forgiven.....

lol when i was little and i learned that "nein" (sp?) means "no", i would go up to people and say "ask me 'will you tell me how old you are?'" then they would say "will you tell me how old you are?" and i would say "nein" and they'd say "you're nine?" then i would laugh so hard at my hilarious joke.

Imago

falloff These threads keep getting better and better.

Seriously, though, it's embarrassing that Americans know so little about themselves and the rest of the world. The vast majority of us are not bilingual, rarely traveled outside of our own borders (this includes folks who haven't been out of state), and received a public education with knowledge of math and science far far behind developing nations--and we're stinking rich in comparison to most!
I remember watching an Oprah interview with American kids about who first 5 presidents of the United States were, and we bombed poorly--but Chinese students were mostly able to get all 5. I felt embarrassed because I certainly would not have known more than the first 3. Hell, I don't even know who's in line to become president if the Present, Vice President, and House Speaker die. shrug

sad.
