I was just wondering if any of you go to garage sales or second hand stores. Yesterday I dropped off an old lazy boy chair and a vcr that i no longer needed at the Goodwill. I decided to look around the store and for 2.50 purchased an autographed copy of the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, (I don't think they realized it was autographed) and a vintage Boston Celtics T - Shirt from the 80's that had the celtics logo and I Hate LA written on the back! I went to a garage sale down the street from me early this morning and checked out records and C.D,'s This guy was selling records for a 2 dollars a pop and his C.D.'s at two for a dollar. I boought 2 records, one by the Joy Division, and a classic Chi Lites album and two C.D.'s Three E.P.'s by the Beta Band, and Melancholie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins! What have you found at garage sales and second hand stores!

I used to go to second hand clothes stores alot but not so much anymore. Im going to get back into it when I get back to the UK as you can pick up some real bargains. I got a lovely second hand duffle coat a few years ago.

Back when I wasn't making much money, I used to love thrift stores.

Unfortunately, I'm more comfortable in a Hollister or Express Men than a second-hand store now. Though I still like the outlet stores in Orlando alot.

I used to go to garage sales and estate sales for sewing supplies. I hit the jackpot one time,this old lady passed on ( ) and she left behind loads of fabric,threads,needles etc. I got it all. Except for her size 16 dress form

A friend of mine goes to thrift stores to find old concert tees. She scooped up 2 Prince shirts for me.

I go to garage sales every so often. I've picked up a few good sales on computer parts, but then there's the flip side and you find someone trying to sell off a Pentium II computer for $500.

I love second hand stores.
You can get some seriously good things there cheap.
I found a long string of malachite beads for $1. Got a Saks 5th Ave party dress for a couple dollars. I get a lot of things in places like that.
My sister is the queen of bargain finding. I love shopping with her because she just gets the best deals. She found a whole set of never been used Nautica nursery things for $15- 4 sets of sheets, crib bumbers, comforter, lamp, blankets, mobile, wall hangings, this stuff was prolly worth $600. All still in the original packages. She also once found a gorgeous Jessica McClintock dress for her daughter for $10, also never worn, the tags said the original price was $460.

You just never know what you're going to find.

Oh yeah I forgot about estate sales and church garage sales. Thats where you find the best records and golf clubs.

Used to ALL the time. In recent years, I've gotten away from shopping as a recreational activity because I can't afford it and I don't need more Stuff.

BUT, a lot of what I own I got secondhand from one place or another. Both chairs in my living room, my coffee "table" (an old trunk), my piano and violin, my dog crate, bathroom storage thingies, half of my shoes (including my red metallic Airwalks, which are perhaps my favorite thriftstore find ever ). . .'cause of my size I find it tough to get clothes at thrift stores -- the selection just isn't that great for me -- but I got some cool winter clothes at Goodwill this year. Some of my kitchen stuff is from garage sales.

So, yeah.

2nd hand stores and the gear you can find in them are terrific .. love the ones in Frisco.

I dont buy cloths.
But I love looking for furnishings. Especially at flea markets, ebay, auctions, and estate sales. Thrift stores are a plus too.

maybe second hand stores occasionally but I find you usually just buy junk you don't really need at garage sales because it's cheap and I need less things in the house not more.

I didn't read the content of the thread, cuz it was too squished together, but yeah, I do all the time.

I actually scored my FIRST PRINCE TAPE at a garage sale. We call them yard sales though.

I just dropped off some stuff at the Salvation Army this weekend. I didn't go in and shop, but I often frequent second-hand stores. You can find some really great stuff!

I used to buy loads of records there, but I don't do that so much these days. But I do collect penguins (not real ones of course ) and I found loads there that i couldn't have found anywhere else.

i'd say about 70% of my music collection is used. i have really good used CD karma - i can go to reckless records in my neighborhood and find recently released albums in the used bins all the time, and it's gotten to where i REALLY have to want an album to spend more than 8.99 on it.

i do the used clothes thing now and then. there's a charity shop about a block away from my apartment that i donate to all the time, and every now and then i browse. i've gotten some house crap from there - pots and pans and stuff - and i found the madhouse 8 vinyl there for a dollar.

i totally love the idea of NOT buying into the commercial machine that demands we replace everything we own every six months to keep the GNP rising.

i like not wasting useful items and i love being able to find used books, movies and albums at discounted prices.

I grew up wearing almost all Goodwill. Kmart was a TREAT. I had fantasies about Mervyns.

But let me play devil's advocate: one might wear secondhand clothes to appear "alternative", but one might also appreciate not giving money to big companies to enslave Chinese children when one can dress themselves quite nicely for $1.99 at their local thriftstore and also be participating in recycling, and sometimes a worthwhile charity.

Ive been thrifting since I was 14. My cousin came and visited and she was in college and she took me to my first thrift store . She found this kick ass belt it was real thick leather with brass hole/rivets. Like those ones all the stores imitate cheaply now, and she gave it to me. I was hooked from then on.

I used to hit Flea Markets alot when I was younger. But I usually just went there for the same things, cheap porn, knockoff colognes, fireworks, and occasionally a new bowl. Some of them used to sell really cool magic tricks too, and imitation Transformers.
