Whew! That question is almost impossible to answer. Of course it would be so easy for me to draw the conclusion from watching some American TV shows that Europeans are more intelligent but I just can't do that. For starters, Europe is a continent, "America" (or the USA) is a country, so it's impossible to talk about Europeans as one country. Non-Europeans tend to talk about "European" culture, when they really mean British, German or French culture. I come from Iceland which is by many people considered really close culturally to the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland) and therefore I would probably be considered to be "Scandinavian" by some of y'all, which of course is bollocks!
From my personal perspective, Icelandic culture is a kind of mixture between American and British culture with a hint of Nordic influences plus we share the relaxed attitude towards sex and nudity with the Mediterranean countries.

When it comes to Americans, it's quite hard for me to generalize about Americans, because for starters, I've never visited the USA. The few Americans I've met here in Iceland are very unlike the "ugly American" stereotypes portrayed in the media. They came across as very polite people, quite intelligent and open-minded. What surprised me the most was that these Americans I've met considered most of their fellow countrymen, especially in the South, to be rather dumb. I must take in to account though, that these Americans all came from an academic background (either with college or university education).

what does intelligence mean anyway? but it is funny to see people from America admit they are inferior to Europeans. i would love to hear some of the reasons why they think that but i have a felling it is based on prejudice and assumptions and politics.

i am sure people think i am an idiot because i do not agree with them. but i also bet that some of those very same people would argue that truth is subjective.
