I remember watching an Oprah interview with American kids about who first 5 presidents of the United States were, and we bombed poorly--but Chinese students were mostly able to get all 5. I felt embarrassed because I certainly would not have known more than the first 3.

Eh, most adult people around the world would not know that about their own country. It's pretty useless trivia to know things like that (at least to be able to name them outright). That's not education, it's propaganda. The Chinese ideal of education is learning everything by numbers anyway and not allowing anyone to develop their own way of thinking.

Why is Oprah making such assumptions about the level of education? That's just stupid.

Oprah's interview was specifically with children, and specifically geared towards the failure of Public Schools in America to teach its children.

As for my ignorance of government, it embarrasses me on a personal level strictly.

Most of the private religious schools are far far better than the public schools.

But I'd try my best to look for a non-religious private school. shrug

Public School in America ..... SUCKS.

My sisters kids are now going to a DOD school in the UK (American run), and they are now learning far more than they would have at their school here in Florida--and the school here was rated as an "A" school!

Moreover, they teacher at the DOD school realized within minutes that the youngest kid was double-jointed, and rated him at a reading far below what he was being rated here in the States. It angers me that schools here are failing our kids. We're raising dumbasses!
