NUMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, I don't generally consider myself a numbers person. I know math but never got past pre-algebra in school so I have a kind of fear when it comes to math When I was in elementary school, I was in the gifted program and when I went into Jr. High, they placed me in all advanced classes. I did fine in English and Reading but found myself on Mars when I walked into the Algebra class. I went to school in a poor area and my school never even touched on the idea of algebra, whereas the kids in the rich part of town were already doing pre-algebr/algebra in the 6th grade.
Instead of even trying to teach me, the teacher that first day sent me to the principals office to change to a lower math class. Well the math class I ended up in became like a black hole because they only focused on the basics, I think I was in the retarded math class to be honest and they never got back to the levels of algebra so I was never able to advance further in my high school life because the class I was in the year before didn't prepare me to go further and because I wasn't prepared to go further I was put back in a retarded math class So much for No Child Left Behind Anyway, coincidentally I have an accounting job. I started out with the company I'm at now in an administrative position, which is more my background but I got laid off the 3rd month here and was referred to another department. I went for the interview and when I got there I found out it was an accounting job. Right away I tried refusing the job because of my historical fear of math The Manager refused to accept my rejection and asked that I give him 2 weeks and if after 2 weeks I didn't like the job I could move on. Well I gave him 2 weeks and found that it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. Matter of fact, in 2 years I learned every single job in my department OK, that really isn't the point of this thread but I wanted to give context to the fact that I am not really a numbers person by nature and still have a bit of fear linked to math, although I have proven I understand a whole hell of a lot more than just the basics by being in an analytical accounting position for the last 5 1/2 years. Ok, now we come to the real point of this thread. I do this thing with numbers. I can't really remember back to a time when I didn't do this but whenever I see numbers I do all kinds of calculations to see how that number is relevant to me. And I can really do these calculations rather quickly and figure out if the number is meaningful to me. I'll give a few examples of what I'm talking about. First Example: A Phone # I got a phone number early last year from someone I met and as soon as I saw the number bells and whistles started going off in my head. I began looking at and calculating the phone number and here is what I found:
That accounts for all 5 of us kids. The only person missing from my calculation was my mother. I looked and looked at the number but it wasn't there. Obviously I could manipulate and twist the numbers to get there but it has to be there naturally in order to be relevant. So I was kind of bothered that her birthday wasn't in there. How could all of us kids birthdays be in that phone number but not hers? Then I went calculating in my head ..... and I realized that if you added the numbers in this person's zip code together you came up with my mother's birthday! Next example. The dart board: The numbers of the dart board are the same no matter where you play the game. I think Maybe it's different in other countries. But all the dart boards I have ever seen had the same sequence of numbers. My birthday is next to each other on the dart board: 3/17
Combine this calculation and you have my birthday 3/17/1970. I can even go further with this, 17 - 5 =12. Add 1 and 2 and you have 3. 3 from 20 is 17. So the column next to 17 calculates 17 and the column next to 3 calculates to 3. Perfectly perfectly balanced Next example The days of my life: So Tuesday 2/20 was the very first day without my ex in the same city as me or even the same state. I broke up with him last June and that set things in motion in his life and he decided to move back to the east coast. This is a great thing for me because it is a definite closure and there is absolutely no way that we are having a relationship even if I wanted. We are as far away from each other in this country as you can get. So I was with one of my best friends and I told her that today (2/20/07) is the first day of the next chapter of my life. Then it hit me I asked....What if I live to be 72 and today is the exact center of my life She stopped to think about that for a second and just shook her head because it was too much to think about So the next day at work I calculated how many days I had been alive on 02/20/2007 and it came to 13,490 days. Immediately I begin discecting it and calculating and it is just PERFECTION! Take the 2 figures and put them side by side: 13,490 - 02/20/2007
But I want to break this down even further: Take the amount of days I was alive on 02/20/2007 - 13,490
so you have 31 - 7 - 7 - 0.....my birthday is 3/17/70! OK, I'm sure most of you are right about now but I do this stuff all the time. I have to and I'm not really sure why But I can really break this down very quickly after looking at a number. Coincidentally, the same thing I was able to do with the dart board and my birthday, I was able to do with my co-worker who was born 10/6/1966. Look at the dart board and 10 and 6 are next to each other. Go straight across from 6 and you have 11. 11x6 = 66. Next to 6 is 13, 6+13 is 19. so again, you have 10/6/1966!!!!! Am I the only freak of nature who does this shit? Please tell me I'm not alone! . [Edited 2/20/08 16:53pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

i love numbers. i actually found a really cool series of repeating patterns in number strings which, when added together make bigger patterns which, when added together make even bigger patterns.... i doubt i found anything new but i'm dying to know what this number pattern thingy is called. i would post it here but it would take too much time

my niece is in grade five and they were doing some sort of thing with numbers... i had no clue until she showed me
something in long division how everything is supposed to equal out. 27 becomes 2+7=9 and that has to jive with the quotient say 18 becomes 1+8=9 so therefore you did the equasion right

So to the left of the third finger you have 2 to the right you have 7, so 27.

[Edited 2/23/07 13:12pm] the suckiest thing about it is that i was always behind in math all the way up till i graduated high school, so i missed out on a lotta stuff. all the holding back the schools did on me didn't make much sense anyway.

I think thats the reason they dont interest me as much. They are building blocks and although you have ascribed meaning to them, they dont have a visual impact like art or a sound like words on a page. / [Edited 2/23/07 13:23pm]
