Ya, I think you nailed it.

There are things in life that can bring us immense joy. For me, that would be my son. But there are other things that can make us really unhappy.

Even so, I would consider myself to be 'happy'.

it gets better in the sense that you've gained a new perspective on life and you learn and gain from these new things...

Hey..

I went through hell in my twenties. I was a miserable pud, always depressed.

It gets better as you get older. I promise.

I think it's quite rare you find a time in your life where with everything considered you're completely 100% happy.

However, I think we find a way to set certain negative things aside. It's definitely possible for humans to honestly and genuinely forget greater, more far reaching troubles and be happy doing something small we enjoy, at least for a while.

Sometimes the good things, if there are any, are just overwhelmed by bad things and it's hard to even find small moments of happiness, but I think it's also rare that we don't manage to block out the bad things at least for a while in order to enjoy something. Those are the roughest of times.

I think we're happy about certain things and unhappy about other things. I'm sure we've all had experiences that will remain in our heads forever, and pop up in our memories at the most inopportune times, and we've all got something negative going on in our lives all the time (we just forget sometimes). At the same time, most people are able to enjoy things for a while, even a few minutes. It is a balancing act, yes. But to achieve happiness I think we have to accept both the negative and the positive. That way, we can enjoy our life even though there are stresses outside our 'fun' moments. If any of that makes sense.

I used to think being happy had something to do with how things were going externally.

I had a stretch in my adult life when I had no responsibility, no worry, and could basically do whatever I wanted - whenever I wanted. And still there were points where I was unhappy.

So I've accepted that I'm not happy 100% of the time. Perhaps there's something chemical, or internal (biorhythm?), but this acceptance seemed to raise my basal level of happiness. Now I got stress, every reason to be anxious, and yet - I'm alright.

To be happy I think you have to decide what makes you happy and what you can live with and without.

No one can create happiness for you. You create your own happiness.

Oh, and my own answer to the thread...

...I don't think it's possible to be entirely happy if you can manage coherant thought. There's too many things in this world to worry about. Even when I'm happy in general, there's something at the back of my mind saying: "Oh shite."

I'd be better if I were rich, didn't have to work, and was free to go off and look at all sorts of stuff whenever I wanted. Maybe. But then I'd have the same old fucking manfriend concerns, making things work... our cat Pogo might still throw up and worry me, etc.

Whatever.
This one's for you.

There were times in my lidfe where I was truly happy, yeah, for most of my life I was.

Why would you think that you can't TRULY be happy?

People who let stress infect them to the point where they are miserable, worry me.

Exactly. My 4-step program for happiness:

1. Figure out what makes you unhappy.
2. Don't do those things.
3. Figure out what makes you happy.
4. Do those things instead.

I think you'll find that, as you age, it gets a lot easier to accomplish nos. 1 & 3.

I was happy up until my Dad died.

Then my son was born and that high took away that unhappiness, then I had my daughter came and added more hapiness.

Now I have no more BABIES and I woke up and am like, FUCK, my Dad IS dead!

I'm just starting to realize and deal with this now.

How do you get HAPPY after soemthing like that?
