hmmm hard to say. it's basically posing the question of whether your life is more important than another person's. and i can't say that i think mine is. shrug but overall, i'd be more likely to die for a cause than for an individual. i'd do that in a heartbeat.

I'm too afraid to die to say for sure. I'd like to think I'd be heroic and save Alex, my brother or dad, but quite honestly, it would all depend.

If they'd done something asinine to get themselves in the situation, I'd definitely not do it. biggrin The rest would depend on adrenaline, etc.

I'm a puss.
This one's for you.

Please don't judge me for this answer. I think long and hard about weird things like this as I'm sure others do. I would truly die for anyone, even a stranger who happens to be an awful person. There is no way I expect anyone to understand, to believe my answer, or to relate, but I am completely comfortable with death even if it means a true end of life. I would rather die than be responsible for someone else's death.

Additionally, the other person, 99% of the time, is much more likely to have more to live for than I do right now. That's not meant to sound dark--it's just the truth.

listen honey, i am a god awful person, but i need a liver because i am a stanking alcoholic to boot.

Thank you everybody, very interesting answers. As you can see they vary quite a lot. It's not a given how we would act even though it might seem obvious at first glance.

Special thanks to those of you who put extra thought and true honesty into your answers, you know who you are.

It would be impossible to know until presented with a particular situation. A lot would depend on that situation. Sacrificing your life "accidentally" for someone else due to a reactionary situation would be yes for all of the above. As humans (I hope) we would jump to anyones assistance without really "thinking" about it first. If it was a case of "oh oh, shoot me shoot me, but spare XXXXX" then first I would have to be pretty damn sure XXXXX would be spared and then it would probably be my wife and child, possibly sibs.

Of course you would be, otherwise the question would be useless. This is not a real situation I'm asking about, it's a hypothetical scenario. The whole point is that it should be a pure choice, without distracting factors of different kinds.

Spontaneously I'd say no to everyone except my child (if I'd had one) and my sister, but since I would find it near impossible to live with myself having chosen my own life over somebody else's (the guilt would make my life into a zombie-like existence not worth having), it forces me to say yes to everyone.

See, I would certainly risk my life for just about anyone. I think it's in me to just automatically react in that way, a kinda knee jerk response.

But I would not consciously hand my life over to save the life of another...except my son's.

I don't think I could answer without knowing the circumstances. And even then, I don't know that I'd know until it happened to me.
It's easy to say now, sure I'd die for so-and-so or no way would I die for them, but I don't think I'd be able to say for sure until I was faced with that choice.
[Edited 2/26/07 15:33pm]

I feel this way too. I feel like I'd die for more people than I would say I would die for, ironically.

I don't want to die for anyone (I'm very selfish), but I think I'd try to save someone if the time came.

I don't think anyone knows until they're there, though.
