How did this happen? I hate my job now. OK,
A while ago, I was promised management of a property in Pacifica. That sale fell through. I have been living as the resident manager for a complex in Redwood City for over a year. I was offered to manage a property in Menlo Park. My boss wanted me to move to this new property, even though they were going to sell it in a couple months. I said no. We negotiated back and forth for about a week, and I stood my ground. My daughter is enrolled in a school right down the street, and I didn't want to yank her away from her friends. He finally told me that I had a choice: I could stay where I was OR move to the other property. He offered my a substantial raise, and I began managing that property on Feb 1st. I get direct deposit checks, and I looked at my online statement, and noticed that my raise NEVER WENT THROUGH. I questioned my boss about it, and he says "well, you never decided whether you were going to move or not" I said "we already discussed that, and you told me I could stay where I was" Well well well.....he decides to tell me that he was running an ad to replace me with "someone who was willing to move onsite" and that I could back to doing what I was doing. So not only does he lie to me about my options, he never gave me the raise he promised, and blames ME for it. I'm pretty much done with this A-hole, and have been talking to several brokers and mortgage companies. I see it as a sign to move on. What would you do?

Sounds to me like he was hoping you'd sleep with him to get the job. "Waiting to be banned"

Yeah, I was warned about him from the beginning. He has asked me to do several inappropriate things, such as hooking him up with a resident. He's slightly racist, discriminating, and cuts corners with the budget. I'm sick of this lack of integrity.

I see it as a basic "shit or get off the pot" kind of thing. I am going to talk to a broker this morning. She wanted to hire me on a few months ago, but I turned it down. I will seriously consider her offer today.

What exactly does a resident manager do? What is a typical work day like for you? Just curious.
As for your problem, it does sound like it's time to move on. The real estate market is huge so I'm sure there are plenty of other fish in the sea.

Well, usually, the resident manager lives on site, as it is California law that at least one employee must live onsite if the property is larger than 16 units. So...I manage the property, and am the on call emergency contact, so my job doesn't end when my shift ends. I'm thinking that I've been under stress because of this. I can never count on any privacy, and you just never know when someone is going to call or knock on your door. My argument was that if I were to move to the other property, there would be no one HERE. I consider myself a great salesperson, and have been feeling like I'm wasting my talents with this company.

Right, but what does "manage the property" mean? Do you change broken radiators? Do you do renovation work yourself? Or is it just a desk job where you keep track of who has paid the rent and who hasn't, etc? I just don't know what types of things a resident manager actually does in a normal work day. I can totally sympathize with being stressed out because the job requires you to be on call. Then you're always working, at least mentally speaking. You can never completely relax. It must almost feel like being imprisoned. I consider myself a great salesperson, and have been feeling like I'm wasting my talents with this company.
Okay, so showing the apartments to new potential tenants is not part of your job then? I guess the real estate agent does that. Is there no sales aspect in your job at all? In that case maybe you should become a real estate agent instead.

ALL OF IT!!! And I'm tired, so tired.

The average property manager makes close to $80K a year. ESPECIALLY if they are involved in the management of more than one property. Maybe I should sell cars?
