Go for Corian if you can afford it. They're considered the best in the world.

Well, the people who lived in the house before them (they just bought it about three years ago) weren't exactly the cleanest folk. lol

Yeah, I mean, I wipe my counters down constantly anyways, with that lysol kitchen cleaner.

I was just curious about little crumbs getting in the grooves where the grout meets the tile.

Well, that's maintenance then really...keeping the grout up to par/filled in should eliminate crumb catching. nod

My complex went through a major remodeling last year. We put crown molding throughout, colors on the walls, new fixtures and hardware, etc.

I've got Italian tile on my kitchen counters. It looks a lot like Travertine. And yes, the grout can be a problem.
But it's really nice.

No, bad advice!

Kitchens can make a sale! If you can, invest in a good countertop. You'll make your money back and more.

Surething: Slate can be expensive, but like I said, it's worth the investment.

Love the slate idea!

Not at all, it's expensive and very high quality material that is extremely resiliant. You can cut bread directly on the counter without leaving a mark on it and you can even put a pot of boiling water directly on it also without leaving a mark. Plus it's easy to clean and looks nice. I don't usually get impressed by kitchen stuff but corian counters are something special.

Eww eek lol hug

some people choose not to use chemicals on their counters though ... chemical free homes and all ... doesn't mean the people or homes are nasty by any means

Still not a problem just a lot more work... seal the grout and be diligent. However, if someone lived there prior and really turned the grout into a train wreck then I don't think one chemical grout cleanse would do harm.... Just go outside for the day and leave the windows open. ( I am allergic to the stuff so that is what I do anyway) Then they could seal it off and not worry so much... shrug

I like to use nontoxic, environmentally-safe, "hippy dippy" (thanks Matt lol) cleaning products plus elbow grease most of the time, but every once in a while I pull out the bleachy shit and 409 and whatnot for a deep cleaning. I figure, moderation. shrug

Corian is a good countertop.

I have a tile countertop in my apt. and I hate it. The grout is hard to clean and missing in places and the tile can chip if you drop something on it.

don't get black granite counter tops, or granite with alot of sparkle or glitter like effect. TACKY and out dated. Something with a soap stone look to it is quite handsome. this silestone claims to be anti bacterial..

unless you go with soap stone, which is one of my favorites.
my other favorite is giant slabs of carrara marble, but that all depends on the style you are going for.

Ugh, I know what you mean! Grout is very frustrating to clean. I was scrubbing the bathroon this weekend, and had a horrible time getting fruit punch stains out of the counter top. (My man likes to drink fruit punch anywhere, and everywhere. lol ) The stains never really came out, so the next person who lives in our apartment may just have to deal with pink grout in the bathroom.

No it isn't. It can take heat and doesn't stain easily and you can remove any scratches you get on the surface. It isn't cheap either $100 and up a running foot.
But it comes in a lot of color options and really is a durable counter.

Yeah, and thats what I need. Something thats durable like that.

I also do a lot of rolling out dough and stuff, so I'd like a section with wood, like the island or something. I dunno.

Tile = bad. Grout = BAD.

If you can afford it, do granite or something. I would personally like butcher block, stainless steel, or concrete. But they all have pros/cons.

My sister has butcher block with tile around the sink. Looks great, but she hates the tile. She likes the wood, though, and it's very DIY & cheap.

We had tile growing up and my mom kept it clean, though.

Granite also has staining issues, I believe alcohol. It's really the way to go right now, I wonder if it's going to be really dated at some point.

My point above.

Usually something that trendy gets old quick.

Corian has to get cut for the sink just like granite, rite?

My parents had butcher block growing up.

I mite get butcher block in one section.
