There is a lovely little book exchange in Luang Prabang in Laos. There are some quality books in there and they give you a fair deal. You can also get a lovely coffee and sit outside to watch the Buddhist monks ride by on their bicyles.

I always judge a city by its comic book stores. Copenhagen only has a couple of good ones and no good one for back issues, so I buy my new comics in the local store, but order my backissues from Mile High Comics in Denver, Colorado. biggrin

nowadays that's the only kinda bookstore i frequent...comic book stores. i haven't been to my two usual haunts (big brain and dreamhaven) lately...i'm overdue.

You know, I've yet to find a really great indie bookstore in Mpls. I'm sure they exist, and it's weird that I don't know. But I can't think of any off the top of my head.
But it's true that I am constantly going to great bookstores when I travel...

That would likely be because you have already gathered enough reading material to last the next 5 years! wink

My town has an excellent book store with used magazines. I stock up on history, WWII, famous military battles, civil war, etc. type of mags only because I love history. If I subscribed to any of the magazines, I probably wouldn't read them as much. This way, I can get the magazine with the subjects and stories I want to read. Even the letters to the editor are interesting. Anecdotes from historians and personal experiences of military personnel add to the knowledge.
When I travel, ALWAYS get local cookbooks in English.

New York museum of modern art. The one on Central Park. Has the best collection of Tiffany stained glass books. (who didn't do all his designs, the artisans in his studio did, and he took credit)

I know I'm not supposed to like Borders or Barnes and Noble, but I do. I like the clean, no-nonsense atmosphere. I like the annonymity of shopping there. I like browsing the tables. I know it's all big-chain marketing ploys and publishers probably pay to get their books on end caps and such, but I can't help it.

you know what, i do too. i go to borders a lot, actually. if there's some big mainstream book or DVD just being released, i know i can get it on sale there for cheap. plus, yeah, i like getting lost there and being around a staff that doesn't give a crap if i'm there or not, because i'm better at finding what i'm looking for than any of the employees.

i always go back to the indie shops, though, because that's where i discover things.
