I judge a city by it's bookstores.

I do.

I love London and Groningen. I severely dislike Paris cuz of it.

You know, I've yet to find a really great indie bookstore in Mpls. I'm sure they exist, and it's weird that I don't know. But I can't think of any off the top of my head.
But it's true that I am constantly going to great bookstores when I travel...

But that is just ONE... the rest is all yawn

Even though I slightly love WH Smith on the Tulleries as well, as I used to buy a book, then read it in the garden, basking whenever the sun was out in early spring or late autumn.

Magers & Quinn is good, but I'm sometimes a snob in that I don't really like used books. I like new books. I like the heavy paper, I like hardbacks, I like the smell of them. redface
Used bookstores rarely have as nice a selection as a good indie store as well. I'll haveta check out amazon. And there's a couple good ones in St Paul, now that I think about it, but who goes to St Paul? giggle

st. paul, ewww! barf giggle

it's just weird, there aren't very many indie bookstores here in mpls...there's more chain bookstores than anything. i get sick of having to go to borders or barnes & noble for stuff, it gets boring. shinders doesn't have a big enough selection (the shinders by my house, anyway...haven't been to the other locations).

But in a weird attractive way.

I wear boots to such places. So it doesn't matter when it gets sticky.

Do you read french? If not, then I can see why you're not getting much out of Parisian book stores. It's all about knowing the local language in order to get access to the gems; the rest are just books with enough mass market appeal to warrant a translation.

I always judge a city by its comic book stores. Copenhagen only has a couple of good ones and no good one for back issues, so I buy my new comics in the local store, but order my backissues from Mile High Comics in Denver, Colorado. biggrin
