"Marie Antoinette" Marie-Antoinette: This is ridiculous. Comtesse de Noailles: This, Madame, is Versailles. Bought the DVD a few days a ago and finally got around to watching it- I'm so happy we purchased it cuz I this film and will be watching it over and over and over... An incredibly beautiful period piece, visually a masterpiece- cinematography and beautifull sets, love the 80's soundtrack AND the COSTUMES and SHOES! Sofia Coppola!!! Socks still got butt like a leather seat...

Ex-Moderator | I agree it's simply gorgeous, the costumes, the shoes, the color scheme, everything.
And the use of music is fabulous. I saw it in the theatre and the scene with the Cure's Untitled gave me chills. For reals. BUT - I think it falls flat somewhere after that. It's pretty and has a great soundtrack, but I don't think she quite gets to the message. That, and a lot of it is boring. I need to watch it again, for sure, but it just didn't quite get there for me. |

I had hears so many bad things about it that I wasn't going to rent it. Maybe I will. I should never listen to the critics. And "All Cats Are Grey" was played over the closing credits. The entire soundtrack is excellent. I think the movie should win the best costumes award on the Oscars tonight. It's a very pretty looking film.

I love period pieces like that.....Elizabeth is one of my top 5 movies of all time...so now, I'm probably gonna go get this one....hadn't planned on it because I'd also read and heard that it wasn't all that good....
..but my question is, does the '80s soundtrack detract from the period, ala A Knight's Tale, with the wave and other foolishness? He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

Keep in mind though, that 'Marie Antoinette' is nothing like that in that it's not meant to be historically accurate. I kind of look at it as if an Adam Ant music video tried to tell the story of Marie Antoinette. (Count Fersen from Sweden with whom she has an affair in the film is even modeled after Adam Ant.) If the fact that everyone speaks English (Louix XV even has a Texan accent) doesn't bother you then I don't think the postpunk soundtrack will either.
