Imago said: http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=744955 This is interesting. Apparently since the colonization and American and subsequent extermination of its native peoples (a subject for a whole OTHER thread), it appears that the British accent ALSO differs from its original state.
Interesting Article! "The sound r was lost (except before vowels) somewhere over 200 years ago in London. " I never even thought about this, but its true, we dont pronounce our Rs. lol. Rrrr!

British ones of course. But I bet people would be outraged if they made a movie about the founding fathers where they would speak with British accents.

Ok people here's the deal before you make my athlete's foot act up!
Bermudians (Dan - spelling) do have a creole that over the many years has been blanded out. I suppose this is due to the fact that many people go overseas for their tertiary education and return to a business world where it is unacceptable to talk in a Bermudian accent. The Bermudian accent was once described to me by an American as a mix of Scottish, Jamaican, and American. That's prolly a pretty good description. Along with that accent comes a real language that a lot of people dont realize. Slang or colluquiliasms have formed a unique dialect here. So for instance...when you say "oh Missus So and So, did you hear about her? She's gone back" - that means she is sick. or if you say to your wife who is talking to her girlfriend on the phone "vooman!, stop chopsin'! you're running up my phone bill!" there's so much more to it as well. I love the Bermudian accent. I've been in major American cities minding my own business and all of a sudden I hear the accent and I turn around and I see people I recognize. It's true. We'll have to have a Yahoo session one day. [Edited 2/24/07 6:19am]

Though your accent doesn't sound like it has any of the mentioned "Creole" or Jamaican in it. The only distinct thing to your cute little voice I can pick up is that cute little lisp. You have athelete's foot? You nasty bitch!

Are you sure it's not Barbuda? No, it's definitely Bermuda. We belong to the AME church, which has a large congregation in Bermuda, and he's a pastor who was transferred from one of the churches there. I've never even heard of Barbuda- I Googled it before I responded. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

x 100000 I have always been fascinated by why Australia and America changed our accents from the Brits so dramatically. The AUstralian (to the untrained American ear) seems to sound more British than our accents do. Of course I am sure that the Brits probably think both accents are vulgar sounding. Not both, no.
