Strange.

There's a buzz going around that we're losing 40% of the staff in my department. Being that we're all white collar IT Technology folks, that's a substantial cut.

Anyways, 4 people are expected to be let go in my office (we have 10 people).
I may be one of them.

We'll see shrug

Those who have been laid off. Got advise?

hopefully your value to the company will not be judged or based on your ability to spell the various days of the week.

I was laid off from my first job...luckily I hated it so much that I had already contacted a temp agency and started looking for something else.

My advice:
--make sure your resume is up to date
--contact or at least research temp agencies. Maybe you could do that in the interim.
--you might want to refill all/any prescriptions before Wednesday...(b/c if you get laid off, you will either have no health insurance or you'll have to pay COBRA, which is pretty expensive.)
--find out what you'll need to do to file & receive unemployment. (In my situation, in Chicago, I filed for unemployment immediately, but they don't give you any unless you are out of work for 2 weeks I think it was. By that time I had already started temping so I never received unemployment.)
--if you are one of the ones they keep, don't gloat--you don't want bad karma.

Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I've reached a weird state of calm in all of it. Almost like I'm thankful something is waking me up and allowing me to realize that I need to be steering my own boat, so to speak. shrug

No matter what happens you'll be fine. It takes a bit of adjustment, but, if it happens, it could be the best thing that happened to you in the long run.

Hang in there...and try not to take it personally if they escort you out of the building. That's pretty standard when people get laid-off.

Unemployment doesn't recover the full extent of my income or expenses.
But yes, I've already looked into Unemployment.

I think folks that *have* to work understand what this does to your lifestyle. no no no!

Yeah, I think I'll be fine. Like I said, I think if it does happen tomorrow morning, it'll be a wake up call.

If it doesn't happen, it still will be a wakeup call.
